did anyone here watch the documentary on bbc2 tonight?
quite enthralling, most of us know of the politics of the times, the invasion from the vikings up north, harold and his army having to win one major battle then face an enemy on the south coast, arrow in the eye etc.
what really surprised me was that william of normandy was a descendant of viking pirates from 150 years earlier.
i always pictured him as a genuine frenchman complete with beret, striped shirt, string of onions, the lot.
worth the licence fee just to get to the truth.

I did and thought it was excellent.

Like you Howard I thought it was well worth the licence fee, I learnt more about history than I ever learnt at school.
Did you see the program before "The Normans" which was "Coast" another excellent production. Both programs well worth the licence fee (says he who gets a free one now

).

Don't believe everything I tell you Howard.
Yes, I am a fan of Simon Sharma as well, he makes everything so interesting.

sharma had a charm all of his own, i remember him rattling on about the henry the eighth period with the break up of the the church.
he came out with a classic line "all lost on a simple jewish boy like me".
cracked me up.

Well, they slew a few hundred thousand anglo-saxons, stole the land and gifted it to mates and collaborators, and turned half our language French. I suppose Motte and Bailey were a decent comedy act; though the funny hats and slapstick wore a bit thin after a while. But what other 'good' did they do?

Embroidery mainly; crew cuts not so much.
They were not shy to remedy violations of treaties but, ironically, they also secured Harold's place in history (and embroidery) and were the driving force behind English Heritage.

6 January 1066, Harold II crowned. 9 months later a bastard was in charge. Plus ça change...
