    Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There is poverty in the world. This is a Bad Thing. There is a need for fun and laughter and glamour. This is not a Bad Thing. The two can co-exist - as humans we can work hard to alleviate poverty and hardship and also enjoy ourselves. If the money had not been spent on the Oscars it would not have gone to the Third World or to poor kids in the UK. It's a bit like saying we should not enjoy a beer ot two while there are people without fresh water to drink - it's a Bad Thing that peope don't have fresh water and we should work to alleviate that, but that doesn't mean we should not enjoy a beer........
