So whilst Dover talks of closing facilities, go-ahead Rochdale celebrates our vibrant diversity by introducing more ethnically acceptable toilets.
I feel the need for a cultural awareness course coming on!

Rochdale was featured on the BBC's 'Mary Queen of Shops' programme a couple of weeks ago. You think Dover has it bad? Rochdale town centre is currently at 76% empty retail premises; entire streets with shuttered up shops.......depressing beyond belief.
True friends stab you in the front.
It's hard enough getting rid of squatters as it is under current legislation.!

Much as i hate to agree with the political correct crowd but the squat and drop kharsi, is healthier and is a more natural way.

But how does one keep balance AND do the crossword??
Perhaps a small nest of tables is the answer Bob? Would go nicely with the bookcase and mag rack I keep next to my own rather more conservative bog at home.

One of the Dover Pissoirs:
A feature of the construction site picture is the unusual building, bottom corner, left, a French style pissoir (wc) of different design to one which stood near the junction of Woolcomber Street and Maison Dieu Road, outside Old St James Church.

More info on the picture above:
Liverpool Street: Mote Bulwark and pissoir
The Mote Bulwark on the cliff face below Dover Castle (top) and what is believed to be an army drill hall being built off what is now Townwall Street, before the Second World War. An unusual feature of the picture is the small structure, bottom left. This appears to be a French style pissoir (wc.) This was not far from another pissoir, of different design, near to Old St James Church and the junction of Woolcomber Street and Maison Dieu Road, until just after the Second World War.
That once well known feature was destroyed by Council workmen, inspite of efforts to preserve it. The explanation apparently being that these men pulled down the wrong urinal! A keen eye may also spot another feature -- a line of towels hanging up to dry. These are believed to be connected with the adjoining beach huts shown in their winter storage yard.

Not so many years ago it was quite normal to enter a public facility in France and find what, in my family, were referred to as 'starting block' toilets. On the back of the door was often a fetching caricature of Richard III, with the exhortation 'Point de virgules, SVP'.

Was that a caricature of Richard the 111 or of a Richard the 111, Peter ?

I think you know the answer to that, Roger. The French have never been in the habit of displaying pictures of English kings.
