    Sublime
Today I discovered a man belonging to a Trade Union that actually spoke some sense. Hard to believe but trust me, Brendan Barber is that man. He has requested employers to make facilities available for staff to take time-out at work to watch the England World Cup matches. The workers would commit to making up the time later as part of an agreement between employer and employee.

This, Brendan argues, will stop workers from finding excuses not to go to work and damaging the economy. What a good man he is for suggesting such a simple and sensible scheme. Hat's off to Brendan Barber.

    Ridiculous
Canterbury City Council today announced that taxis would not be allowed to fly the flag of St George for the World Cup because it transgressed a regulation stipulating that taxis must only have a "Taxi" sign and company name and phone number on the side. Cabbies would be allowed (yep, they enforce a dress code too it seems) to wear England footiee shirts though. The announcement was made public by a particularly dull Larissa Laing who spoke as though she hadn't got a clue what the World Cup meant to soccer fans.

I hope the cabbies stick two fingers up at CCC and fly their flags, I'm sure the public will support them. Incidentally, council, dust carts are also ranked as public service vehicles, so the bin men are affected by this ruling too.

As a passing thought, will Dover cabbies be expected to also follow a similarly daft regulation at this time? Surely sense and sense of occasion will prevail?
