spotted in a restaurant window in castle street the following:-
a suggested discretionary service charge of 10% will be added to the bill.
how is that suggested and discretionary?
I guess there view would be it is discretionary because if you ask they will remove it, that would be enough for me to suggest i dont go in there!!
Whilst I am happy to tip for exceptional service I find the idea of tipping as a matter of course to be both patronising and demeaning. I expect to pay the going rate for the service and expect the employees to be paid a reasonable wage for their efforts without relying on my munificence.
On the other hand, when I was driving taxis years ago, working for a percentage of the fare taken, tips were an important part of the 'wage'.
What I've never understood is why anyone would tip a fly!
