Topic Subject...It is time to see our town hall open again to the public
- 16 October 2009 21:5730717Now that the summer has gone can the Town and District council work with each other to get our Dover town hall open again in the day time ready for next summer for all the public that come to Dover from all over the world"AND THEY DO" Time after time you see them trying to get in and have a look round the great hall and the old Town council meeting rooms.There is so much for them to see in our town hall and only the ones that go to events there see it all,and most of them are local.
When the cruise liners come in and the public come in to the town and some do or there are planned excursions come,the town hall is the first place they stop to look at the doors are open but the sigh says "Closed to the public" When the district first handed it over to the outside company to run and put on events there,we was told on the Town council it would still stay open most days in the daytime so the public could have a good round it.
And for some time that did happen but it got less and less and today It is always closed to the public,we must get it open up again before next year,and each time there are cruise ships in , doors must be open to them.
the company that runs the town hall do avery good job of doing that,and we all know the food etc is good in there when there is a event on.
But they do not like the public going in there just to look around,but they both go with each other. So come on council get the DOORS OPEN AGAIN,for all of the public to see/.

- 16 October 2009 22:1730724Paul you are right but the council can still make them open the doors in the day time even if they do not wish to. I have already had this discuss with them before but got nowhere with it. So it is up to the big boys now.

they still have the wednesday afternoon dance there. - 17 October 2009 21:4830813Howard having a dance on a wednesday afternoon is not the same as having it open to the public to look round in the summer weeks.I will again put pen to paper as well as geting one of the locals to write about it. But some ing has to be done before next year.
- 17 October 2009 22:0930815About 5years ago I was in the papers telling you all about the back of the town hall as well,I went on to say that the District was wrong to sell it off as flats,how RIGHT I was just look at the mess it is in today.tHE first company went bust,and it was left without nothing being done for more than two years,I again went to the district.they told me work was to start up again .I went on to tell them all about the lower windows,they said they would all be done and made safe,but what did they do, they just put hardwood over them.
They did start work but only for a few weeks,now again just look at it when you next walk by it or park the car there it is bad very bad.
And this is the main building in the town, the Town Hall no less.Hang your heads down District Council you got this one wrong big time.

Roger - 18 October 2009 08:1730828I actually had a look at those flats when I came here...or I wasnt long here so had a look with view to maybe buying one. Although they appeared to be well made and well laid out and so on...there were no carparking spaces allocated. You had to take potluck with your parking around the town!! Although in some ways a relatively small problem, in other ways its a real no - no. You cant sell new stuff without facilities these days.. With a young child at the time going back and forth and nowhere to park a car...a problem which put us off. So didnt proceed.
Taking the public carpark away and giving it to the flats might have solved that problem...but...email: dover7@msn.com - 19 October 2009 07:3830916I can understand that Paul eminently sensible - when people buy a flat or house Paul, they know what the facilities are, including of course where to park their car; if people don't have a car, then they would have been O.K. It's always good to have somewhere private to park it, even if not in a garage.

But in private hands it wont be - 19 October 2009 21:4230980Of course Keith the private sector are so much better at looking after things and after all it's only a 'public' building. The irony of our 'public' transport and 'public' services is all getting too much for me these days!
In Connaught Hall last week I noticed the signs of that 'love' that only the private sector can deliver. It won't be long before some of those beautiful Burgess details get the 'private sector plasterboard treatment'.
