Thought members may be interested in a bit of Mr Hannans recent background and statements.

The right-wing Tory MEP and leader writer for the Daily Telegraph Daniel Hannan faces expulsion from the conservative group in the European Parliament. He unbelievably compared the introduction of new powers for the EP President (the German Hans-Gert Pöttering - himself a conservative) to prevent the misuse of procedural devices with the 1933 Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz) that gave Hitler unlimited power. This all happened on 31st January 2008 during Holocaust week!

After Hannan's disgraceful remarks his own group leader, the French Joseph Daul, took the floor to anoounce that he would seek the expulsion of Mr Hannan. the Socialist Group in the European Parliament also published a few reactions:

Socialist spokesman on Constitutional Affairs, Richard Corbett said: "Dan Hannan's comparison of President Pöttering to Hitler was absolutely disgraceful and he is likely to be rightly expelled from the EPP as a result."

Martin Schulz (leader of the Socialist Group): "Mr Hannan's remarks were a deep insult to Hans-Gert Pöttering and the whole European Parliament. Mr Daul's response shows that he is a very honest man. People like Hannan not only do not speak on behalf of the Conservatives in Europe, they have no base in the European Parliament. They are entirely isolated. The Conservatives in Great Britain and their leader David Cameron should reflect on whether such people, so close to the right-wing extremists, should be in their party."

So this is your new moderate Tory party, Mr Cameron?
