I had a tortoise for YEARS! Looked after it well, fed it properly, kept it in great health, loved it. I named him Speedy and grew up through most of my childhood with him (I was never allowed a dog). One day there was a news item on TV about the banning of tortoise imports and the value of the animals was likely to rocket. Shortly after this revelation my beloved Speedy got stolen. Please draw on your imagination how devastated and upset I was - it was pretty awful. I'd probably still have Speedy had he not been stolen.
I met a guy in Dover who breeds them but I never did get another one. Well, I ended up with dogs. But I think the black market sale of this fantastic creatures is awful. I know that tortoise owners tend to love their half-shell reptile buddies as much as dogs or cats and having them stolen can be pretty gutting.
