  Since the turn of the year I have never seen the town so quiet. Even allowing for the post Christmas lull London Rd was desolate late morning, I did notice that the shop that used to be Veness had people working inside but the old Central Cafe is still empty and the building to the side seems to be decaying. The experts are predicting another slump and that consumer debt is so high we can't look to the retail trade to cheer things up.
