The two towns have very similar history. Deal was once a bigger port than Dover and both have strong military and mining heritage.
The difference over the last couple of decades is that Deal has had very little investment or interest from local government allowing it to keep its quaintness and has had to rely on its community who rally around its causes. Their strong community hasn't gone unnoticed to rich folk who have invested. Good example is the Rose pub.
What you have had in Dover is DDC thinking they know best and have invested in so many white elephants that they have destroyed the community. White Cliffs Experience, St James, Weird Market Square Rings, Big Screen, Weird Wooden Plant boxes, Fast Track bus, I could go on all day.
It's like DDC are trying to build a new city without the required population. Dover once had a fantastic high street and community. What DDC should have done is tidied up all the dilapidated bits and invested in what we already had but sadly they have gone too far in the wrong direction. The saddest part is these people making these awful decisions in DDC don't even live in Dover and probably have no idea about its proud history.
