  The new act relates to the money spent canvassing for elections by the Political Parties. At the moment it applies to general elections and means that from January they will have to account for all promotional spending during an election year. Previously this only applied to the period between an election being called then the count. This is why we would all get swamped with those glossy leaflets saying "aren't we wonderful and isn't everyone else rubbish" in the period before an election was called. In practice it will mean more to the smaller parties than the two big single ethic parties ('we are for the working man so everything we do is good' or 'we stand for the business community so everything we do is good') as they will not be able to afford to distribute regular "we're so great" leaflets.
