    The stance adopted by the Conservative opposition to the Chancellor's Pre Budget Report this week may be an abandonment of their attempts in recent years to be seen as a party of progressive politics.

    If they were to cut public spending in the areas of social policy and to let unemployment rise as they have done in previous times does that not signal a key change of direction?
