That's the problem of changing the measuring stick, what constitutes a violent crime, when you get results you don't want to see. Would the figures have been any different if the Conservatives had been in charge instead? Personally I have my doubts as criminal violence is rarely, if ever, politically motivated.
Claims such as these I would take with a pinch of salt anyway because a "44% increase" doesn't tell me very much without knowing the base numbers to start with. Nor does it say anything about improved reporting, detection or clear-up rates (or even if there have been improvements).
So what plans do the Conservatives have to reduce the number of violent crimes in the future?
