    I think the criticism of the DHB is a little unfair. They have provided plenty of opportunity for consultation and for local people to put forward ideas for what they would like to see as part of the development. They asked, for example, what sort of leisure amenities could possibly replace any further loss of beach. The fact that they maintain their view that the development of the port and corporate restructuring does not mean they are not listening. I believe they are working hard to ensure that Dover gains a community fund as part of any deal.

    On a separate point, I think the state of the public finances means the reality is that public funding will not be forthcoming. The new government has started to outline their priorities and identify which areas are ring-fenced. Trust ports are not one of them.
