One of my favourite song`s which I never tire of hearing, is Julie London singing `Fly me to the Moon`, and nothing to do with my interest`s. From an age of enjoying the romantic sounding song`s, together with the romantic sounding lyric`s, such as `Let me see what Spring is like on Jupiter and Mars`, if that was composed today, I`m sure it would be slagged off as ridiculous, as I can assure you, Jupiter and Mars would be hell on Earth anytime of the year! Anybody got any personal favourite songs that they like, but the word`s just wouldn`t make sense today? I`m out of touch with modern songs, so, do they still compose romantic sounding lyrics like they used to?

i hope not colin,i was always more into the johnny rotten style of lyric.
"i am an anarchist, i am an antichrist", stuff like that.
lyrics like that gives me a warm glow.

Julie London's version is good, but I still think Sinatra's incompatible.
I can remember my father playing it when the world still had 'gramophones'!
Quincy Jones (who co-incidentally shares a birthday with Charlie Elphicke) changed the time signature from 3/4 to 4/4 and with Count Basie produced a great example of early 60s 'swing'.
My favourite is Sukiyaki by Kyo Sakamoto. A happy sad song if ever there was one.

Roger and Sid, Kyo Sakamoto singing Sukiyaki, one of my 60s favourite`s, and never found it on LP or CD. Go onto youtube though and you can see him singing (miming) it back in the 60s. He was killed a couple of year`s later in a plane crash.

Sukiyaki is as iconic a song as there is Japan; it's the number one performed song in Karaoke bars across the country, as we found out to our cost when we went to one in Miyazaki. All our Japanese friends inisisted on singing it in Japanese and English, and afterwards in the car on the way home; I can still see the cheesy 60s video playing in my head like it's on a loop..........
I'm not sure that I have a favourite, my choice changes with mood and a zillion other factors. If I do have one, it'll be Your Song, by Elton John. It's the lyrics, magical.
True friends stab you in the front.
Hi Roger, it is possible to get the Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen version, but the proper recording by Kyu Sakamoto is only available online from America. I bought a compilation CD on Amazon:
Billboard Top Pop Hits 1963
the CD also includes:
Walk right in - The Rooftop Singers
Hey Paula - Paul & Paula
Pipline - Chantay's
Rythm of the Rain - The Cascades
Blue Velvet - Bobby Vinton
Dominique - The Singing Nun
I'm Leaving it up to You - Dale & Grace
Sally, Go Round the Roses - The Jaynetts
Wipe Out - The Surfaris
If I remember correctly, I paid £7.00 for the CD and it arrived in about 4 days from California.
