Re #624: Here is a photo of the destruction caused by the last German shell to land on Dover in WW2, taken from the late Roy Humphreys fascinating book "Dover at War 1939-45". It fell on shops owned by Pickfords and Hubbards the umbrella manufacturers - unfortunately the umbrellas were not resistant to high explosive shells dropping on a ballistic trajectory from heavy naval guns mounted in batteries on the French coast! Later the TSB and now the Gateway.

Re 621: Here is a propaganda postcard of the first bomb to be dropped on Dover, Christmas Eve 1914. It can be seen in various books on Dover but I have actually just acquired this postcard from Germany off Ebay. It took months to arrive, unlike the actual bomb. My address is First Floor Flat, 9 Victoria Park, Dover. The postcard was correctly addressed but was delivered to First Floor Flat, 9 Victoria Park, Herne Bay! This was back in the snow last winter. There was a knock at the door some weeks ago and there was the chap who had received it. He had very kindly delivered it in person on his first visit to Dover after receiving it!
