Yes it is indeed the Stour just the seaward side of Sandwich, last monday in fact. The tree is indeed an apple tree, was told all info by an energetic roving rambler who ambled by. There are many apple orchards about the area it seems and the seeds would have been dropped here by birds..said my fountain of knowledge. Quite a few apple trees growing wild as a consequence.
Here is a picture looking the other direction and all becomes clearer..one direction all is rural bliss by the look of it, the other direction alas spoils the bliss a tad as its an industrial landscape in the background...Pfizer etc
