With society as it is today, wondered what would you do if you saw 2 people fighting say a lady and a man
would you
a; Walk past
b; Intervene
c; phone someone to help
Its interesting because society has changed so much, with knives, guns, becoming an issue, do you get involved?
do you walk past?
A smaller scale of this was when in the council chamber I remember clearly A cllr Kit Smith one of barry's
who was in a debate about people who drop litter, he said that when anyone saw someone drop litter they should tap them on the shoulder and ask them to put it in the bin.
The Idea is a good one, but im afraid its one that can also cause even more grief, if the situaton turns nasty,
We have a very big education programme to put in place before we can get to Cllr Smith's views, and its not just the young that drop litter.
So what would you do????????????????????????????????
A while back I saw a man and woman in town arguing in a way that made it clear it was going to turn a bit rough, so I hopped into the police station which was close by to ask for help. I suspect that if the nick hadn't been close by I would, like an idiot, have intervened. If I had my children with me it might be different. And yes, I do often ask people to pick up their litter, but it is a little alarming sometimes, and I don't always do it if the children are with me, just in case.........

Most likely C but it would depend on where / who it was. I have waded in before now if I felt safe to do so (all 5' 4" and 7.5 stone of me, that kind of threw them actually!)
If it was two men then I would phone or get someone to help. I couldn't ignore it, there but for the grace of God......

You cannot generalise on this subject, that is a very silly question Keith.
A lot would depend on so many things.
Were the fighters drunk/drugged up
Were they equally to blame
Were they of equal stature and ability
Do you know the circumstances that caused the fight
Is it a domestic argument
Are you going to inflame the situation by poking your nose in
Are you going to get hurt yourself by intervening
etc etc
Everyone should be sensible about a situation like a fight, why get hurt yourself because of someone elses stupidity, and in doing so cause your own family distress.
There are, of course, times when it's ok to wade in, as Jeane said, but on the whole I think it's best to leave this sort of thing to those concerned or the police.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

i would always avoid getting involved if it looks like a "domestic".
even the police are very wary of these situations.
they can be very volatile.

I was going to the sub-post-office by the underpass last year and a young guy was verbally and physically abusing a young girl.
I intervened and told him to pack it in, calling him a bully and to leave her alone.
The verbal abuse I got back was so full of hate, I was actually shocked.
I took the girl into the post-office and asked them to call the police, which they did.
They guy ran into the Regency guest house next door where he was staying.
The Police came (quite quickly really) searched the Regency, but couldn't find him and then talked to the girl.
They did say they wanted to talk to me later, but never did, so I don't know what happened.
Looking back, I could have been just another dead statistic, but when you see some yob beating up a girl, you don't (do you ??) just stand there thinking over the consequences of what might happen.

Do understand there are number of other reasons that would have to be looked at, but silly question it was NOT
thanks to those that have a view on this.

In the majority of instances I hold myself back as have been on the receiving end when trying to calm things down in the past. But in the case that Roger has just mentioned, I think would have done exactly the same, she is someone else's daughter and needs to be protected from physical abuse. Well Done,

Yes you're right Keith, silly wasn't the word I meant. What I was trying to say was that it's a complex subject. I would love to be able to intervene if I saw someone being hurt, but I know I haven't got the strength or the courage to do anything except maybe call the police. Maybe if I was younger and fitter I might be able to do more. I must admit that I have never witnessed a fight so I can't in all honesty say what I would do, I hope I would be braver than I think I am. I think I would definitely intervene if it was a child being hurt - that would be like a red rag to a bull for me!

the guest house you refer to has always taken in some "interesting" guests.
i am sure that you are aware of this.
what annoys me is when they still advertise vacancies.
anyone staying there, after arriving from the continent would not get a wink of sleep.
I always have in my head that whoever it is, it is some Mothers son or daughter..........
