When we purchase anything from a supermarket, especially the dreaded Poundland, the cost of paying someone to operate a checkout has been factored in to the price you pay for it. When you use a self service checkout you are doing two things....one is doing someone out of employment, and the other is allowing the store to rip you off. When we use one of these things we should be offered a discount of the factored in cost of not doing so. It makes sense. What is even worse are the disgraceful checkouts in Aldi, where the aged, and people who are otherwise slower, cannot manage the ridiculously fast speed.Shame on them.
I used to hold that view but in the end relented, comforting myself with the fact that many people are cheating the system and don't see it as doing anything wrong. I don't use Aldi but I understand the concept to be one of speed to keep things moving and prices down and as customers are made aware of it I don't see a problem. The Food Warehouse in St James operates the same way but I don't think customers are aware of it, a few times now my items have gone through and money is demanded of me when the previous customer is still loading up his or her purchases so I just stand and look blank.
