What struck me in this close run thing is where the two candidates got their core support from.

Mr van der Bellend is a Junker clone. Fortunately the Austrian presidency has no power, it's mostly a ceremonial role.

The role has powers that haven't been used. The President is head of the armed forces and can refuse to swear in a government.

Interestingly both candidates saw TTIP as a disaster for Austria much like most people do in the EU.

The result has now been made null and void in court due to irregularities with the postal votes, many not eligible to vote and doubts about those doing the counting.

Back to the status quo from the thirties, the far right have claimed back their natural home of Austria.
It remains to be seen how the EU will react as they seem rather comfortable with bully boys taking control as the Catalans will use as evidence.

More important is how will the inexperienced young leader cope with the old guard or should the question be how will the experienced cope with the youngster.
Another country that has possibly rebelled against the EU stalwarts and their doctrines?

Will be interesting to see how the EU will react now as both parties that will form a coalition are very clear about immigration being brought to a halt. I think Brussels will accept that in order not to rock the boat but stopping benefits to new arrivals and capping payments to refugees will worry them as it would likely spread to other EU countries.
