Sophia - bingo! A couple of points for you...

    - the UK will indeed become a "3rd country" in EU eyes after Brexit
    - none of the current EU Member States (including the UK) is a member of TIR in its own right, only by virtue of being part of the EU - though the UK could 're-join' TIR when it leaves
    - the EU requires TIR movements to be additionally covered by Common Transit (CT) which is also an alternative to TIR in a number of countries
    - again, EU Member States are indirectly members of CT by virtue of their EU status - though the UK could 're-join' CT when it leaves and that is exactly what the UK government has said it wishes to do.

Howard, there has never been completely borderless trade across the ILB and there are now many more recognised crossing points than there used to be "approved routes" - though you do have a point in that border controls on freight were not what you might call intrusive.
