The system is discredited in my view with people who have volunteered their services over a life time getting an MBE whilst other just dip into their pockets to pay for a Knighthood.

Or they get top honours for simply doing their jobs which are highly paid, that includes MPs and top civil servants.

A few people have turned down gongs because of the word "Empire" being involved, surely in modern times it should be order or member of the Commonwealth?

Why? What's wrong with Empire? It's always been Empire . We need to stop pandering to the sniveling liberals and if they don't like it then tough.

You make a good point. Why would anyone, really understanding the term 'Empire', accept an award titled as such? The whole antiquated system reflects perfectly the antiquated mindset of those harking back to a more oppressive era. Imperialism, of course, brings benefits but these are always at the expense of the indigenous population and very often the oppression/suppression is more than just a brutal act.

My point is that imperialism was indeed in general oppressive to the indigenous population but it was also a bloody long time ago and we should not as individuals feel guilty or responsible for our ancestor's actions. Let's move on and look to the future not backwards whilst wringing our hands.

Paul M I think that's the problem, some feel we are still in that oppressive empire, We are no longer the big power base we once thought we was.
Yes look forward but recognise times have changed

I don't disagree with you there, Paul M. I do think the 'Empire' wording is tainted and ought to be changed - if, indeed, the honours system as it currently exists is to become more relevant.
(Didn't boxing titles changed from British Empire Champion to Commonwealth Champion?)

Order of the British Commonwealth? Order of the commonwealth Empire? We should stick with what we've got and stop trying to appease those with offend-initis!

I don't see it as an issue of political correctness just modernising things. Empire Games changed to Commonwealth games and Wembley used to be known as the Empire Stadium.

Why not get rid of all the traditional names and just call them award Grade One, Grade Two and so on, even the Commonwealth title might not be relevant in the future.
Who really cares what they are called it is the honour of receiving one that matters, all I want is for them to go to those who really deserve them unlike now.
