If DTC or its reps were genuinely interested, they would get out in St Rads and ask some questions.
In FPTP, there should be a percentage of the electorate threshold below which no rep can be elected (say 50%); the election would be void if this is not reached. Among other things, it would actually make candidates work hard for votes and demonstrate their commitment, rather than assuming easy votes.
As for 'compulsory voting', why should anyone be compelled to vote for someone he or she has no confidence in or whose policies he or she does not support? Coercion ought to be far from the mind of a genuine democrat. Most likely more people would vote if there were a '
