Not sure whether this a political issue but there is a lot of hollering and hooting over the contract going overseas. My understanding is that all contracts over a certain amount have to be advertised in a certain journal(forget the name) so that businesses in all member states have the opportunity to tender for the work.

Correct. The OJEU journal. Countries can use the national security get out clause ( mainly France and Germany) but most countries stick to the rules.

I guess this is what happens when you rely on gesture politics rather than principles. The only reason for the change from burgundy to blue was a symbolic one, trumpeted in a patriotic fervour by the Pry Mincer late last year. I believe it received approbation from the Daily Mail, and the Brexiteers fell for it. Now another symbol (French-produced UK passports, Mon Dieu!) has crept up behind her and bitten her where it hurts. Ouch! And it was all going so well with that Russian diversion.

This is absolutely fantastic irony. I love it. Joking aside, passports are already expensive enough without the Daily Mail demanding that they be made more expensive!
In addition to the overall irony - it is farcical for the guy from the UK company to bellyache that they didn't get the contract - which should go to a UK company, just coz, and at the same time proudly announce that they made passports for 40 other countries. Can't have it all ways!

....and now in an endless wave of irony, the Tories are all demanding we follow the French example of not going to tender, which is only possible because French passports are produced by a state owned/ran company - the exact opposite of everything the Tories stand for!

Whilst we are on the subject of passports this has been handed in as lost property in a Salisbury police station.

I can't imagine Uncle Vlad going under his own name, unlike other 'diplomats'.
