Questions in the house. From our MP
Thought I would start a thread about issues being raised by the MP so that we can touch on them.
This was asked by Charley in parliament last week.
To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer,,,, how many investigations have been launched into EU hauliers paying below the minimum wage to their drivers in each of the last five years for which data is available; and how many of those investigations resulted in successful prosecution?
To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what estimate he has made of the loss of tax revenue resulting from EU-based hauliers paying below the minimum wage while working in the UK; and if he will make a statement? (End of statement)
I don’t think our government is fully aware just what’s happening in the industry regarding undercutting by East European workers. I worked on one construction site and 2 Romanian gang masters controlled over 200 Romanian men. I am convinced this lot didn’t get paid UK pay rates.
And the gangmaster licencing only covers agriculture and packhouse workers; the rest is just the wild west.

I brought this subject up many years ago whereby farmers, construction companies and others can source an agency in another member state to supply staff. The agency then pays the wages of the workers in the minimum wage that applies in their country.

Forget any hotlines Keith these are seriously nasty people who let it be known that workers have families back home who will suffer if they blow the whistle. Various newspapers have tried to interview agricultural labourers living in overcrowded caravans on site with no modern facilities but drawn a blank. the same would apply to construction workers.

I agree Howard lots of the gangmasters are nothing more than gangsters. But the hotline is a bit of a damp squid if its only interested in agriculture and the taxpayers are paying for the staff to man the phones
But getting back to the issue raised by the MP.
Just think of all the lorry companies that have lost business because they can not compete with this lot paying around 3 P/H. And equally, it applies to building contractors, that have to compete with cheap imported workers.

Car washes are one of the prime areas for human trafficking.
Note that the one on the outskirts of Walmer appears to have closed.
Mostly manned by East European workers.

So why do you think they all wear masks in nail bars? Go figure.

we need an ICI unit like America.
UK immigration is a joke; I was on one site with hundreds of men on it when immigration rocked up in a small bus all very visible.
immigrants were running all over jumping fences and escaping; the immigration got about six out a hundred .but I did see some good rugby tackles.
The think immigration could have harvested every body's fingerprints because the site was fingerprint turnstile entry.
And they neve even bothered questioned the 2 Romanian gangmasters.
