I think your right Howard, more a case of Goldsmith being so unpopular people voted against him.
It appears the Lib Dems had a power base in the area which they built upon
The Lib Dems were badly damaged by going in with the tories and some unkept promises.
This will take time to correct.
It has to be added the Tories(in a strong Tory area) gave Goldsmith a clear run.
with the labour vote collapse.
Is it me or do others feel the Lib Dem leader has been missing for some time?
It was a good result for the Lib dems but its how this carries across the country.

Farron ha been working hard Keith but does not have the media presence of Clegg. 400 canvassers were working for the Lib Dems including many local Labour activists who wanted to see the back of the obnoxious Goldsmith, they were doing their final leafleting on polling day starting at 4 am.

Let's not forget, James Goldsmith, his father, started and bankrolled The Referendum Party (UKIP's previous badge) - famously standing against David Mellor in Putney. People have long memories. Couple that with Zac Goldsmith's Mayoral campaign that turned racist in the days before the Londoners went to the polls and it is little wonder that he is out on his ear.
Frankly, as he is a tax-dodging Tory (trust fund beneficiary) representing the tax payers, it is rather unpalatable that he was ever allowed to represent the people in the first place.

It would have been interesting to know what the result would have been if an official Tory representative had stood. I know they were worried about a split vote but surely headquarters knew how unpopular Goldsmith had become in the constituency.

I have had a talk to Mr Goldsmith many years go when we was both in the new party they are a party from Scotland I did bring the leaders down to Dover not a bad party and a party which has a lot of cash behind them.

the lib dems are far from returning and labour had the cheek to stand in this election then when the next election came expected lib dems greens not to stand in this new very watery pact

I wouldn't write them off nationally Keith, Tim Farron is actively encouraging "Remain" Labour voters to defect to the Lib Dems and of course many campaigned for them recently in Richmond.

Howard politics on the national scene the tories are in for 25 years, it will take at least that time for labour to move on from they are probably by then corbyn will be gone and labourelectingnew leader, moving to middle England to get vote it all goes round in a circle
yes the lib dems will pick a few votes up here and there
the pact wont work between parties nationally labour proved that in Richmond.
so its a long road ahead
