Danny Alexander says 'nutty' Conservatives must be kept in check as he slaps down Vince Cable
The Liberal Democrats have to be in government to keep "nutty" Conservatives in check, Danny
Alexander has said.
Mr Alexander also denied that the Lib Dems are planning to raise taxes for those earning more than
£50,000 a year.
Mr Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said that politics would be "dragged off to the right" if the
Conservatives win a majority at the next election.
He said that the UK "needs" the Lib Dems to keep the government "in the right place".
"I think that for a lot of people in this country who want politics to be located in the centre ground -
not dragged off to the left by trade unions or dragged off to the right by some of the more nutty
backbenchers in the Conservative party - you need the Liberal Democrats in the mix to keep our
government in the right place," Mr Alexander told BBC News.
Mr Alexander also slapped down Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, who this week warned that
the Coalition could break apart before the 2015 election.
Mr Cable on Monday said that it was "certainly possible" that the Coalition could end before polling
day in 2015.
