Alcibiades, who had been given the Athenian strategy and placed at the head of 30,000 soldiers and sailors, defected to Sparta with the intention of making the Athenian army and navy fail, along with all their allies: the very forces he had been given command over.
He succeeded, almost the entire Athenian expedition to Syracuse was wiped out, including the reinforcements that had later been sent there. In all, well over 40,000 men.
Athens fell into turmoil.
Then Alcibiades negotiated his return to Athens as the only person who could save the city.
His terms: "I am the sole leader and there can be no more Democracy".
And: "If you do not do as I want or if you question me, I will make you fail".
