The Messerschmitt Bf 109E seen in the photo was shot down by fighters over Dover, crashing on Church Farm at Church Whitfield.
Winston Churchill had just been visiting Dover Castle and witnessed the incident while on his way to Ramsgate. He visited the crash site to view the wreckage, against the advice of his bodyguard (Inspector W H Thompson), who was concerned by German aircraft still flying in the vicinty.
