01:0184302I have often wondered just what does happen to old hunting hounds. As I understand it these dogs are unsuitable as pets so what do the hunting fraternity (of which I whole heartedly disapprove) do with them?? Are they turned into "Hot dogs"??

08:5084310Jimmy you are right..these dogs do not make good pets and of course are expensive to keep...and one needs so many of them in order to hunt!
Following the hunting ban they were an unused un-needed commodity. A commodity is just there to make money so nobody keeps these dogs for affection...the result therfore was an untimely end for many. They did not have to be old ones to meet an early fate either. I saw a programme to this effect on television some time back. Not good.
But then killing the fox wasnt good either.

09:1084312Foxes are just being shot now instead of hunted, PaulB - they are pests that need to be controlled.
You are right that a lot of hounds had to be put down thanks to so called 'animal lovers' who cared more for the vermin than the hounds.

wears a rather fetching cravatte(no idea why) and plays happily with other family dog.

12:0484328Keith - as you are aware a lot of hounds, as the so-called animal lovers were warned, have been put down.

12:0984330You write with such passion Barry, about the benefits of foxhunting, may I ask which part of the countryside you lived.

12:2884336Well Barry maybe the breeders of the blood hounds should of capped the amount instead of popping lots out.

12:4284342lol Mel - the problem is not breeding them, or not, but the hounds already part of packs when the ban came in.
Dave1 - I do not live in the country and have never gone fox hunting but I did go hare coursing as a child with my dad. I do know idiotic policies when I see them based on an irrationally sentimental view of animals.

12:4684344Not really surprised that the hounds have been put down. Would not have expected touchy-feely concern for their welfare from people whose idea of amusement is to ride around the countryside chasing a small animal for the pleasure of seeing it torn to pieces. Not the sort of people to visualise funding a home for retired foxhounds to live out their lives happily after being used for their rather obscene gratification. Easier to slaughter them and blame the soft old animal lovers - "look what you made us do!" The argument that hunting should be continued so that the hounds could still be employed is a bit like saying that the concentration camps should have been kept going so that the guards could still be in a job.

14:5484362As I stated all the fox hounds could have continued to go drag hunting(chasing a scent) all those involved could have continued.
there was/is an alternative

15:0884364In fact ex pack foxhounds make very good pets especially in a house with young kids. The biggest problem is house training them but it can be done with patience, but many people wont have them because of the reputation they have. But don't get one if you have a cat.
