Thanks to him some common sense is being reintroduced with a more spartan prison regime.
The old holiday camp style prisons will be a thing of the past. A higher threshold for good behaviour, fewer tv's in cells, no Sky, a cut in pocket money and so on can only be a good thing.
He also defended the smacking of children - quite right too. It would be better though if he were to support the reintroduction of corporal punishment to schools.

A totally absurd comment that. - An interesting peep into Tom's psyche, a blog is published discussing prisons and discipline in schools. Tom's immediate thought is tory paedophiles, which is a concern.

David: You are entirely correct. The full list is close to being published or buried, the latter state being the less likely.
I have been on the receiving end of the Scottish version of 'scholastic' brutality. They didn't like it when they knew that I knew that they, some, were enjoying themselves.
Where are we to dig-up this new breed of 'brute'? Is the some connection here with the push to have ex-servicemen at the head of the classroom? [Nothing at all brutish about barrack-room discipline?]
The comment, "support the reintroduction of corporal punishment to schools", is the sort of thing to send a ripple of "here, here" around the HoCs and the saloon bar, but what lies behind such?
It couldn't be, "never did me any harm!", this of course is nothing like the abuse victim's logic in carrying on abuse himself?
Mind you, if all of this had to do with dogs or horses I would not be alone in pointing-up the absurdity. - You and your association of corporal punishment/brutality/paedophilia and party politics is what is so totally absurd. Each are separate and different. Shame on you for being so narrow minded that you are unable to see the difference.

What lies behind your call for the reintroduction of adult brutality into the classroom?

- Corporal punishment in the classroom, properly administered, is not brutality. That is not to say that there are not cases of brutality having happened but that is not what I or anyone wants to see.
- Leaving to one side why anybody would wish this to be reintroduced, how could it be implemented?
Are headteachers to be given a £10 or £15k fund to disperse to those on the staff willing to take this on? Should a community peripatetic 'Pierrepoint' be appointed?
Is such punishment, or the witnessing of such punishment, the teaching of only a 'good' lesson?
Would it increase or decrease the uptake of 100%+ mortgages. Would it make people less or more susceptible to any sales-pitch? Would children grow up risk-averse?
Properly administered? Even without the HRA I detect a whole raft of red-tape.
Surely it is best for any proposer of this or similar 'advance' to lay out their stall?
Over and above all of this is the fact that the UK of today is not the UK of yesteryear. Are we to prevent the trade of youthful virginity into Asia and condone righteous discipline by the UK-State?

- Not so Howard - there are plenty of good teachers who would do so when it is appropriate.
Are you aware of the ridiculous lengths schools have to go to these days with behavioural problems? It is beyond a joke and, in many cases, this could be nipped in the bud. There will always be the odd hard case for whom the cane would not work, nothing works for some. - the punishment books across the board just showed the same names so it was never a deterrent, in my class there 3 regulars, one went to borstal when he was 17 another done a 10 year stretch for armed robbery - didn't teach them anything.

These days they will be given lots of holidays (exclusions) after 'red tickets' and being told how terribly naughty they are. After a year or two of disrupting the schooling of others it may get to the stage where the are expelled (oooops, permanently excluded) provided they spit at enough teachers that is. Swear at them and maybe assault them. All of this, of course, after social workers have intervened, case meetings after case meetings, hours and hours spent on them and thousands spent on them.
The problem is that others catch their 'disease' and these days we have a lot more than your odd few. Better to deal with them the old way. The cane is what they deserve. Some kids need that, other respond to milder punishment whole some, a very few, will not respond to anything.

Should they find work in the City or Banking in general or get elected to Parliament the eleventh commandment will become no more than a foot-note.
I wonder what becomes of those who learn the lesson that violence works while seeing it applied to others? Might they go on to rely upon scapegoats, blaming the poor for the harm done through the greed of the rich, for instance? - Tom- more likely they will end up on the scrap heap because of their behaviour.
