Lots and lots of good news....

22 October 2012

... so what went wrong last week....

Unemployment down, employment up, strengthening indications of economic recovery, election pledge fulfilled (McKinnon - rightly or wrongly...), improved (in fact best ever) NHS waiting list times and even crime down......

...And yet - nothing but poor headlines for the government.  Why?

It can only be the media focus on trivia rather than on what really matters.

Mitchell may well be an obnoxious git, he may or may not have said what he said to the police, but so what?  It is hardly earth shattering news that affects our lives.  Besides the job of Chief Whip needs a nasty little man to get done properly so he was a round peg in a round hole.  Now he is gone and Cameron now has a 'safe pair of hands' in the Chief Whip's role.

Then, of course, there is something dysfunctional about the government's news handling....  but again so what?  They botch some announcement and it needs clarification....  That is not going to make worse or improve the real problems this nation faces.

Finally we are seeing some real positive results from government policy coming through and, hopefully, this should be reinforced this week when growth numbers are announced.  Sad that we have to be side tracked into trivia.  But then good news is no news and when there is lots of good news around that is when the media prefer trivia.   But, in a way, this all outlines the usual problem Conservative governments always have, media and news presentation.  They do need to get a grip on this or their achievements will not be properly acknowledged.
