14 June 2007 Report and picture from Sid Perkins.
The carnival season got off to a winning start for members of DCAL on Saturday.
The Junior Court were in the West Midlands representing Dover at Nuneaton Carnival and, for the second year running, came away with the trophy for Second Place Court of the Day. A fantastic achievement as they competed against Senior Courts from Hornsey (North London), Kettering, Hoddesdon, Corby, Irthlingborough and others.
Although Nuneaton was sunny for almost for the whole duration of the 3-4 mile parade, when the girls came into sight of Cheryl Baker, TV presenter and one time Eurovision winner (yes we had them once) and formerly of pop group Bucks Fizz, the heavens opened, and boy did they open. There was time for a quick last curtsey from the DCAL girls for Cheryl and then it was a mad 200 yard dash to the hall and the post carnival buffet and the trophy presentations.
Picture shows the DCAL Girls, Junior Miss Dover Jessica Lorenz and her two Princesses Jordan Sehmbi and Hannah Yearley with Cheryl Baker.
Whilst the Juniors we were getting very wet in the West Midlands, the Senior Court led by Miss Dover Cloe Atkins, and the Dover Boys court, were representing the town at the Lydd Club Day.
Meanwhile preparations for this years Dover Carnival on Saturday 7th July are continuing with entry forms being received from three organisations in the Buckland Estate. Parade leaves River at 3pm and heads for Castle Street, Market Square, High Street, Bridge Street and finishing in the Maison Dieu car park.
It is still not too late to get an entry into this year’s carnival parade. There are still some forms available from T42 Café in the Indoor Market, or from our website www.dovercarnival.co.uk

When the violent storm of Tuesday night beat down on us with a vengence, most people like you and me would wish to run for cover and head home pronto, but not our Phearless Phil. He chose to do the opposite and went out into the thick of it to bring us these exciting photos from the Bridge St area of the Town and Dour. The horrendous downpour and the effect it had on the River is captured here for all to see. Many of the tales of woe in relation to the storm and the resultant flooding can be read first hand on our Forum. See Panel on left. Well done to our 'roving man on the spot' Fab Forumite
Phil Eyden for bringing us these pictures.
Is this Dover's only growth area?
Well I dont know...but 'container city' is certainly expanding and certainly proliferating with haste aplenty. Where once there were just a few idle containers basking in the twilight glow of the summer evening, now there are many, clogging up the once famous railyard.. which in former days served Dover Marine station. A red variety has been added, as the 'city' moves westwards, and now a whole gaggle of peachy white Del Monte's too, all triple stories high. These new tasty delights are not much of a sweetener on the eye socket as it peers westward towards the horizon. Rumour has it that this new Dovorian structure, along with the Great Wall of China, can be seen from the moon and indeed from the fore lounge of the ever circuling Space Station! Has our planning department taken leave of its senses? Or, do they even know?
Another little gem of info has filtered through, many thanks source, it seems that more than 120 of the beasts have had their 'power leads' stolen over the past couple of weeks. These leads are long and thick and have considerable copper content and are therefore quite valuable. A consideration not lost on the pilferers.
