Dance to Fitness!

7 March 2008

On monday night the doverforum team of ColetteB and myself took a motorised amble up the Coombe Valley Road. Past Gwyn's graffiti disfigured headquarters and onwards into territory I had never seen before. After a short time we reached our destination...The Triangle Centre. I have heard it mentioned in despatches but at last here we were seeing it in the flesh. We parked the car in one of the many spaces and went inside to meet Charlotte Revell who runs her dance class there. This is a new location for model professional Charlotte having previously held her classes at The Churchill Hotel.

We came in time to catch the advanced class and in due reverence have reproduced the pictures in black and white. I have had harder times it must be said than photographing these lovely ladies in long limbed action.

That's Charlotte in the picture on the left fronting the mural in the impressive hall and of course leading her troupe centre stage in the other shots.

Pictured top left to right:Joanna Holmes, Glenda Holmes, Charlotte Revell, Nicky Holmes, and Elaine Murray.

With Spring in the air there has never been a better time to get back in shape.Without further ado let me reproduce a press release I have here which has all the detailed information about joining the class and about Charlotte herself...

Ladies Multi-Style Dance Classes
Instructor: Charlotte Revell

The ladies all meet up each Monday evening at the Triangles Community Centre in Poulton Close to sashay, shimmy, strut (and often giggle) their way through an hour of energetic routines, be it Salsa, cabaret, disco or funk…. or just any style that Charlotte feels they can handle.

Charlotte strives to update traditional aerobic moves by choreographing them into a series of stylised warm ups at the beginning of each class. The warm-up is essential in preparing the body for the work to come, aiming to increase blood flow to the muscles to increase pliability, loosen the synovial fluid that surrounds the joints and slightly raise the heart rate.

The first class starts at 6 o’clock and is open to anyone who has previous experience of attending dance classes, or for people who have a natural sense of style and rhythm and are quick at picking up. The routines are faster paced than the second class and tend to be funkier in style to suit the younger participants. Deep stretching follows the warm-up section and then a routine is learnt that may take 3 or 4 weeks to master and perfect.

The 7 o’clock class completes a warm up and stretch section and then looks at improving certain motor skills such as balance and co-ordination combined with routines that work on muscle tone.
Again, the ladies learn a dance routine for a number of weeks before the style is switched. They are currently learning a latin routine called ‘Moviendo La Cadera’ (Move your hips) but will soon be attempting something from the musicals.
Both classes end with a cool down stretch to gently reduce the heart rate.

Charlotte is a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals, although her background is in professional dance.
At 16, Charlotte left the Dover Grammar School for Girls and moved to Hampstead, London where she attended the Stella Mann School of Performing Arts, graduating with Honours in five different teaching qualifications for the Royal Academy of Dancing and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
At 19 she flew off to New York to rehearse for a Caribbean cruise ship and a relationship with cruising began that was to last intermittently for the next 13 years, interspersed with dancing contracts in the UK and abroad.

In 2006, she returned to Dover and now works full time for the CMS Employment Agency Ltd in the Market Square.

People who are interested in joining the classes should contact Charlotte on 07919 820978 or send an email to charlotterev@hotmail.com using the heading ‘Dance Classes’. At this time, she is particularly interested in people who want to join the 6 – 7pm (Funky) class.
