Dapper man about town, Charlie Elphicke, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Dover and Deal, seen here last night April 27 at the DCAL selection night at the Dover Town Hall. In the picture with Charlie is our very own Mandie Sehmbi, the DCAL Chairman, the lady in white, who organised the whole show, and a selection of the gorgeous girls taking part in the Event.
The Picture on the left was taken last year at the Dover Regatta. All the lovely DCAL girls posed successfully in front of our stand. Some of these girls will be standing down now after a great year. The DCAL Selection night takes place this Sunday April 27 and the doors open at the Town Hall at 2pm.
There is more information below so please scroll down to the DCAL-Ramada Tie Up feature.
But back for a moment to the Regatta and our Doverforum stand. It is unlikely that we will be having a stand this year. Last year we were unable to prepare the stand properly due to work pressure elsewhere so it was a tad dull. Our good friend Roger Walkden helped out greatly though and also at the same time promoted his Dover Loyalty Scheme.
The girls are seen holding leaflets for the Dover Loyalty Scheme and Doverforum.
Well done girls on a successful year.

EXCITING NEW PLAY FACILITIES
FOR DOVER AND WALMER
Innovative new play areas are on the way for Pencester Gardens in Dover and Marke Wood in Walmer, with work on exciting facilities set to begin in Dover today and Walmer next week. The new facilities follow a successful £257,702 bid to the Big Lottery Fund’s Children’s Play Programme.
Modern facilities will include themed areas built to encourage creative play, and will feature landscaped design and structured equipment. The Pencester Gardens area will include a castle theme and a zip wire feature, and the Marke Wood design includes a multi-use climbing frame and a special circular story-telling area.
The work is being funded by BIG’s Children’s Play Programme, with Dover District Council. Designs for the play areas were agreed following extensive public consultation and it is anticipated work will be completed by the end of June.
This follows news of the planning approval for a major state-of-the-art concrete skate park at Victoria Park in Deal, substantially funded by Kent County Council, with additional funding from the Big Lottery Fund and DDC. It is anticipated this will be completed by the end of summer. Youngsters in Sandwich were also given a boost earlier this year with new play equipment funded by DDC at the Butts.
Cllr Nigel Collor, Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management, said: “These exciting new inclusive facilities for Dover and Walmer will provide a great space for children to play, and are an important part of our ongoing commitment to improve strategic sites across the area, in keeping with the District Play Strategy.”
Cllr Mrs Sue Nicholas, Cabinet Member for Community, said: “We continue to work hard to provide modern play facilities for the district, and are very pleased to see these major new play areas being developed for the future of our communities.”

Apples from cigarette smuggling plot to
benefit local wild animal parks.
Officers from the newly formed UK Border Agency (UKBA) have donated 11 pallets of apples to the Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks which had been used in an attempt to camouflage a major cigarette smuggling plot.
Officers seized a staggering 4.6 million cigarettes on, Tuesday, 8 April 2008, which they discovered hidden behind the consignment of apples in a lorry that had arrived at the docks in Dover.
The lorry had arrived on a ferry from Belgium via Calais and the consignment was destined for an address in East Kilbride, Scotland. The cigarettes all branded Goldmans were packed in 15 pallets neatly placed behind the pallets of Gala apples. If undetected by officers the loss to the public purse is estimated at around £750,000, money that could be used to fund vital public services.
Following the detection, the case was passed to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) investigation officers to continue enquiries. The driver of the vehicle, a 28 year-old man from Northern Ireland, was interviewed and later released on bail until 11 June 2008. Enquiries are continuing.
Carole Upshall, Regional Director South of UKBA said:“This is an excellent result and an example of good joint working by the team. We will continue to work with our partners in HMRC to tackle the smugglers who attempt to bring goods illegally into the UK. Smugglers are criminals who are only out to make a profit; they do not care about the harm that they cause by smuggling whether its drugs, dangerous counterfeit cigarettes or illegal immigrants”
Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs spokesman in the South East said:
“We are delighted to donate these apples to the animals at Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks. Hopefully this will prove a valuable resource for the zoo and greatly helps us dispose of these perishable goods in a way that supports the environment. HMRC together with the newly formed UK Border Agency play a vital role in the fight to prevent cigarettes being smuggled into the UK and in protecting our communities from the violence and corruption that always accompany this illegal trade. Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drugs or tobacco smuggling should call our 24 hour confidential line 0800 59 5000."
Great news for the Carnival and a great setting too.
Hope all goes well.
