10 June 2008
Sun Morning June 15:There will be a full and dedicated pagefull of pictures of the Hellfire Corner weekend to follow soon. The Event is still on today sunday so a visit is highly recommended. Recapture those wartime years with music live all day, with a great display of military vehicles, and with many stalls selling lots of fascinating goodies. Not to be missed. It is a very unusual event and very welcome for all that. An excellent crowd turned out in force yesterday to see the forces of old.
The picture above shows the Mayor's contingent arriving on saturday morning to declare the event open. On the left we have the ever effervescent town clerk Mike Webb. Next to him we have his good wife Carole. Then the new Mayor herself Diane Smallwood, who made an excellent speech to open proceedings, followed in the photo above by Jean Farrell, Mayoress, and last but not at all least Una Mills.
comments always welcome - see below.
Ladies Networking with Style!
ColetteB at The Ramada.
The 1st Social Network Event held at The Ramada Hotel on Tuesday 10th June was a Great Success, with Body Shop at Home giving a talk and demonstration of their products. It was more than just a demonstation though as there were makeovers and scrumptious Goodie Bags for all the ladies to pamper themselves when they got home. Annemarie Huigen and Billijo Thomson smothered us with the delights of their products and regaling us with the big names who use their wares. So, Victoria (Beckham that is) what do you think of the new Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask? and David shall I use the Coconut Body Butter on a daily basis? lol!
Not only were we surrounded by the fragrances on offer but also the floral displays supplied by Petals & Blooms, Tracy Whyman gave the finishing touch to the conference room laid on by Michelle Sheppard.
The Ramada treated us to a 'Buffet fit for a Queen' with elaborate cocktails to quench and de-stress the ladies after a hard days work. Congratulations to Michelle on the first of many Ladies Networking Evenings. Business cards and diaries were very busy tuesday night, it was good to meet old friends and make new ones on an evening of 'Total Spoiling' which makes a change from 'Total Football' - A Great Girly Night!
Picture shows some of the Ladies at the Event: Valerie Blankhart, Adeline Reidy, Susan Mullan and Michelle Sheppard.
At the Staffordshire Regiment's Annual Dinner and Dance at Bluebirds
Bluebirds in Snargate Street came alive last saturday night(June7) when the Dover Branch of The Staffordshire Regiment held their annual dinner and dance. It was a great opportunity for former colleagues to get together and remember all those good old days. Some had never lingered in Dover before and were delighted to see it properly for the first time and spend some quality time here in the town. Yes it really was a fantastic evening with fine food and fine wine and all made even finer with a sashay or two around the dancefloor.Yours truly, master of the two left feet, was made to look good by all the lovely females shimmering away. At one time I was in musical harmony on the dancefloor with nine nice women and all at the same time..well it doesnt get any better than this!
The Dover Councils were very well represented as you can see in the picture on the left. Two marvellous chains of office on display here. On the left in the shot we have Cllr Bernard Butcher, who is of course the Chairman of DDC. It was the first time I met Bernard and a very pleasant chap he is too. In the centre we have a face known to many of course, yes it's Cllr Diane Smallwood, our newly elected and very elegant Mayor representing DTC. On the righthandside we have Capt Gus Gordon who made the central and amusing speech welcoming one and all.
The picture on the left shows former Mayor Cllr Jan Tranter enjoying herself at the 'do'. Jan was the only Forumite there. The lady on the right is none other than Gina Quinlan who was one of the main organisers of the event. A good woman behind the scenes is always needed at these events, as we know from experience on Doverforum, and Gina was that essential woman in this case. She did a great job as the whole evening was beautifully organised. One of the real highlights for me was when the regimental band did a drum and trumpet display in the dark..with only the arms of the drummers fluoresced as they beat out the various drumrolls. Excellent.

And now below for the....
Boyzone Re-Union
Well its any teenage girls dream isnt it...to be backstage with the guys from famous Irish group Boyzone when they reformed for a major gig recently at the o2 Arena in Docklands. Here we see Saskia Wadsworth-Smith and Briony Boland clearly delighted to be with Shane Lynch, a sporty fit individual, veteran of many a tv show including the notorious Celebrity Love Island, and also of course singer with Boyzone. On the right we have the much admired Ronan Keating, romantic balladeer par excellence, seen here with an excited Saskia.
Colette Boland was at the huge event and did this report for us below....
"After 8 years in the wilderness, when each band member went their seperate ways either following solo careers or 'resting' from the years of touring, Boyzone finally reformed recently to play this huge gig.
The girls and I set off for Docklands clutching our VIP tickets close to our chests, yes you've guessed it, I'm old enough to know some of the Dublin lads mums, and remember one or two of the boys when they were very much younger kicking about a football or two on the streets of old Dublin.
Briony and Saskia used to sing all the Boyzone songs, when they were around 8 & 10 years old, and were really looking forward to the concert and meeting the lads backstage and at the after concert party.
Well, what can I say, it was a great exciting show with the band belting out all the old favourites and also a few new numbers and some of Ronan Keating's solo hits as well. And when they started playing some Michael Jackson and Osmond covers the roof nearly took off! It was a wonderful concert with myself acting like a teenager, dancing and singing at the top my voice and embarrassing the girls big time (which all Mum's have a God-given right to do lol!).
The after party was great with the girls chattering away like a runaway train in awe of the lads, who made us all feel comfortable and we ended the evening having great 'craic'. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we ended up staying in London as we didn't leave until the early hours of the morning and couldnt get back to Dover.
It was a very memorable night, we had a great time and when we finally got to lay down our heads, we were drifting off to the Land of Nod with the sound of Boyzone 'classics' ringing in our ears."
