Yes I have been working very hard on the Dover Loyalty Scheme Christmas Newsletter.
If any of you would like a copy, please let me know; they were taken to the members' establishments, as well as places like the Dover Express and Mercury offices, the Town and District Council officies, the Discovery Centre, the TIC, Town Hall and many other outlets.
Dover District Council have kindly agreed to distribute the Newsletter to all the staff there (about 500 people) as well as being on display for the public, so that is good.
The whole idea is for people to pick up the Newsletter, read it and either shop with those members, or book a table for your Christmas themed lunch, evening meal or party - don't forget they all give a discount too.
Dover businesses, like anything else, are subject to the "use it or lose it" philosophy - so if Dover businesses cannot make a living - and profit is NOT a dirty word, they'll go bust and close.
We may not (yet) have the super-duper shops of Westwood Cross, now Folkestone, or Canterbury, but if we desert our Town for these other places, we won't have a Town anymore - and we don't want that do we ??
Please look at the web-site and apart from Ladies fashions, our members have all you could need for Christmas, or any other time of the year.

- I don't know how many of you are going out for Christmas lunches or parties this year, but talking to many pubs, restaurants etc. who offer venues, meals and deals, things are very, very quiet; you just aren't spending as you used to.
Office parties, parties with friends or you and your loved one/sweet-heart, are not happening.

Someone told me is it chapter 8 in the market square have pulled out of your scheme is that correct, omeone tried using your card but they said they were no longer members - Yes, that is true Keith, Chapter 8 pulled out when their "FREE" year was up.
I don't think their 5% discount was much of a draw, but it was of course Tony's decision - on how big their discount was and whether to stay a member.
I am looking to upgrade/amend/update the scheme early in the New Year and now that I have address groups to send out info on members and their promotions, many of the ex-members (not that there are that many ex-members) may like to rejoin.
It is a good scheme, the publicity alone is worth more that the £3 or £5 per week and now with all the add-ons and business support initiatives, it is positively cheap (I just have to convince people of that fact).
Back in October 2005 when the scheme was launched, there were 13 members and one outlet.
Now we have 48 members and over 60 outlets.
I have almost run out of the Christmas Newsletters, as Dover District Council are now distributing it to all their staff and after a recent discussion with the Harbour Board, they are kindly doing the same too, so that is quite a few hundred "extra" people who are able to pick up the Newsletter; all employed, so have money to spend, so why not spend it in Dover ??
The Newsletter can now be read on the web-site - www.doverloyaltyscheme.co.uk - it is better if you have broadband as it can take a while to down load otherwise; with B/B it is only about 30 seconds - and well worth it.
Roger - Keef its fairly normal to get the odd one pulling out, its part of the natural process in these things. Oddly enough although I have the Loyalty Card in my wallet for a long time Ive never actually used it and Im not sure what's stopping me. You are never sure are you if the establishment you are in actually takes it so perhaps thats it...

If any one has a card, but are not sure if that establishment is a member or not (I have given them all a poster to put in their window and in some cases put it up for them), ask them.
Yesterday I took a poster I had made up for La Via Romana about their Pasta or Pizza lunches and a glass of red or white wine for just £5.95.
Great value, but no one is asking for it, they hadn't put a notice in their window, so now they have three to put up - two lunchtime posters and one saying they are members of the scheme.
Last night though, it still hadn't been put up.
I can't tell people how to run and market their businesses, but some do need a hand, a big hand sometimes.

they were very busy for a long time.
lately when i go past there are few customers and many times the chef and proprietor are standing outside chatting.

La Via Romana are 1 - 2 King Street; if that is the one you are referring to, yes, they did advise me back in the summer that 95% of their diners were using the Loyalty card for a discount and he thought he couldn't afford to pay out all that discount.
I did say that that shows the success of the scheme - 95% of his business comes from the Loyalty Scheme, take that away and you have an (almost) empty restauarant - as is the case now.
If the signs I took (Pasta and Pizza lunches and a glass of wine, all for £5.95 and the Dover Loyalty Cards accepted here), were put up in the window, the passers by would see it and know about it so they call in then, or go back later, but he must help promote his business too, not just leave it all to me.
I want the scheme to work for all of our members, I am doing as much as I can, but I don't own those businesses.

easy in the summer with tourists coming off of the ferries and cruise ships. - Not sure about being too big fior his boots Howard, more I think, a lack of marketing expertise or not fully understand the customers' needs.
The food is very enjoyable in there and Adnan, the owner, is very good with customers.
We have some great eating places in Dover, but very few people are using them this Christmas; I don't know if it is just lack of money, or what, but all of our members offer great food at very affordable prices, so I don't think it is just that.
I'm not going to say one is bettter or cheaper than the other, people's level of (disposable) income generally determine that, I'd just say that there is now only a couple of days or so to enjoy a meal out with friends or colleagues, so try any of our members.

Roger - Roger I hope your members are having a bumper Christmas. I think you hinted earlier that the places were much quieter out there this year. I wonder if it picked up. Nationally the story was that all the stores were struggling, and had to introduce sales earlier, but latest news is that the top shops are thriving and buzzing. Is this happening in Dover?
Its getting more and more challenging for Dover with the surrounding areas now having seductive shopping complexes.
Did anyone do ALL their shopping in Dover??? Was Dover able to supply ALL your needs?? Would be interesting to know. - paulb

I haven't been round to the members to ask them how they did pre Christmas, but will endeavour to soon.
From what people were telling me, the draw for shoppers to go to Folkestone, Ashford, Canterbury and Westwood Cross was too great so off they went.
These places have the shops people want, which gives them the choice that Dover (currently) doesn't.
People kept going on about how great it would be if we didn't have an ASDA, but leisure facilities instead - you go to the above places anytime of the year and you will find them busy and buzzing and that what Dover needs.
We do have some great independant shops here, with great stock ideas and good staff, but we need the support of Dover District Council on a number of levels.
The higher level - regeneration, is very good and very pro-active and many "big" good developments are coming on stream, but it's at the lower level that the shops need the help - sustainable planning issues, car-parking costs and business rates; this is at ground-level and for many small businesses, the most important level, as this is where they are - on a day to day basis, struggling against these unsustainable planning issues, the car-parking costs and the heavy burden of unnecessarily high business rates.

Did you get the email I sent to all members the other day about the new initiatives I woud like to introduce to enhance the scheme for members ?
Also, a new (free) facility is now that I have these address groups, I can send out an email to all those I have email addresses for, with either an attachment or it can be in the main body of the email, an advert/news item for you (or any of the members) showing what you do, your services and facilities and if you have any special (winter) offers, those too.
This service will be of increasing value to all the members, the more email addresses I get, as I can instantly contact a much greater audience in one go, so it makes it doubly important to have the Loyalty Card form with the card-holders details - especially, or only, the email address.
Let me know Sabrina if you have any thoughts on either of the above.
Roger - It has been a while since I posted any news on the Loyalty Scheme, but it has been difficult doing recruiting while Jean has been so poorly.
I have been doing lots of work at home - on the laptop and telephone.
I have a good new announcement, that I hope will encourage renewed interest in the Loyalty Scheme and greater usage of the card.
**** Vista Leisure Joins the Dover Loyalty Scheme ****
Vista Leisure are offering £1 off swimming to all the Dover Loyalty Scheme card-holders, from the 1st. of March 2008.
Swimming is an important life skill and is a great way to keep fit and lose weight.
National statistics show that swimming as a form of exercise is in decline and more and more children are leaving school without reaching the required swimming standards.
Vista Leisure hopes that this discount will encourage people to pop into their local leisure centre more often and enjoy a dip.

It's not just for those who swim now of course, but to encourage new swimmers there - young and not so young.
Leaving the sedentary life behind is very difficult, but putting in the effort will help every one to feel better about themselves, help them live longer and live better - and save money too.
1st. of March is when the incentive starts.
Roger - Just a reminder really that as from today - 1st. of March you can get a £1.00 discount off of your swim at Dover Leisure Centre, when you show your loyalty-card.
It may not sound much, but if you swim two or three times every week or more, it can add up to some good savings and help you get fitter and slimmer too.

As many of you may remember, La Salle Verte are fairly new members to the Scheme and now offer a 10% discount on all takeaways.
It's a great place to go to eat or drink inside, but now you can take advantage of their takeaway food (and drink) too; alcohol takeouts (wines) don't apply as they don't have an "off-licence".
Haydn tells me they will be introducing "gentle" live music soon, so watch this space.
Any businesses out there who need a meeting room, don't forget that they have the cellar room, beautifully decorated, also has wifi there too.
£50.00 for 4 hours is a very good rate too, especially in such quality surroundings.
Roger - Not posted on the Loyalty Scheme for a while, but I have been busy behind the scenes, so to speak.
First of all, if any of you have a loyalty-card but I don't have your email address to send out "blind" emails to you advising you of what is going on, not just with the Loyalty Scheme members offers and new members etc. but other interesting matters as well as events that are coming up, please do email me and I will be happy to put you on my address groups.
A "blind" email is where your email address is not seen when the email is sent - by anyone; you cannot receive any spam or scam emails from them, I don't sell them on to third parties either - they stay with me, so your email address is very safe.
The more loyalty-card holders' email address I have, the better informed people will be about lots of things. The more you use your loyalty-card, the greater the benefit to the members; the more members we have the greater strength we have too - so don't be shy, send me your email address and use your loyalty card where you can.
We all want better businesses here, but as with everything - use it or lose it and this applies to our businesses and Town Centre too, so by using your loyalty-card, or when you go into a shop who isn't a Loyalty Scheme member, tell them they should be, you'll be helping the whole Town !!

Pilgrims Hospice are the newest members of the Dover Loyalty Scheme and are hoping for your support to help raise funds so they can continue their work.
Pilgrims Hospices is an independent registered charity (293968) and the principal provider of specialist palliative care in East Kent.
They care for patients with range of life limiting illnesses, including cancer, heart-failure, respiratory conditions and neurological diseases.
Care is provided from their three sites in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet. Pilgrims Hospices provide a range of support services for patients, their families and carers and their attractive grounds and facilities provide a welcome retreat for patients and visitors alike.
To keep delivering care to those that need it the most, Pilgrims have to raise over £7.5 million each year; the majority of this comes from our local communities, so fundraising is very important.
How can you help ?
There are a number of ways in which you can help raise funds for the
Pilgrims Hospice:
1) The Lottery
For £1.00 a week, you can win a share of the £4,000 of prizes in the weekly draws. As from the 4th. of April, the Lottery Prize structure will include a weekly rollover of £500, with a maximum prize of £20,000.
You can check on the website to see if you’ve won, but you will be advised.
The Pilgrims Hospice Lottery has raised over £3.5 million towards the
running costs of the 3 centres, so it is a very useful and necessary part of the Hospices fundraising.
2) Donations: straight forward donations to Pilgrims Hospice by cheque or donations in lieu of flowers
By Direct Debit or Standing Orders to the Hospice
3) Bequests, or Legacies in a will – many people will have had a relative or close friend spend their last few days or weeks in a Hospice and seen at first-hand, the quality of care they receive; what better way to ensure the continuance of this service, than by leaving some (necessary) money via a legacy or bequest to Pilgrims Hospice ?
4) Collection Boxes – whenever you see a Pilgrims Hospice Collection Box in a shop, pub, café or restaurant – please, if you can, put your change from your purchase, in there.
5) Charity Shops – a great way to find good quality, second-hand clothes and other items and help raise much needed funds.
There are 17 Pilgrims Hospice Charity shops, Dover’s shop is at 75 London Road – their telephone number is 01304 206046 – please use them to donate unwanted clothes, also have a look inside the shop.

Roger - Too few postings about the Loyalty Scheme recently, so here's a bit of news about some new members and what I have been doing.
The last member I posted about was the wonderful Pilgrims Hospice and the superb and very valuable work they do for those in their last few days.
They need to raise around £7.5 million each year, so they hope that you wll be happy to put your change from your purchases, into the collection boxes in many shops in Dover.
Perhap you would like to take a (better than average) chance on their Lottery, maybe you'll win several thousands of pounds - maybe you won't, but if you are going to do a Lottery, why not support a very good cause ?
There are many ways you can help raise funds for them - if you've had a loved one need their services, you'll know exactly how important it is to help them continue.
Their only income is through fund-raising.
A new member to the Scheme is The First and Last Pub in East Cliff.
The FIRST AND LAST Pub as its name suggests, is the first pub you’ll find, when you arrive in Dover and the last pub when you depart.
Sitting literally at the foot of the World-famous White Cliffs, it is very much a community pub welcoming all through its doors.
Pop along for a drink and some friendly company, you’ll always find a warm welcome there; they have real ales, chilled lagers, a choice of wines and of course the usual spirits.
At present they offer fresh rolls with a choice of fillings, but from the middle of May, they’ll be serving home-cooked lunch and evening meals – fresh, locally sourced, simple but good quality pub-grub for you to enjoy.
They have weekly quiz-nites and if you like pool or darts, they have them too.

Roger - I have been sending round blind emails to all those on my email address groups, informing them on many things: new members, members special offers, public-service emails etc.
The latest is the Great Dover Hospital Debate; here is that circular:
"Good Morning
I'm sure every one would agree that Dover needs/deserves a hospital and we can all justify reasons for it.
I attended a meeting at Dover Town Hall last Friday evening for the public to put their views on this; Charlie Elphicke and Gwynn Prosser were there to lend their support for this.
I'm not sure if it is actually cut and dried that we are NOT going to get a hospital, but I am happy (through the Dover Loyalty Scheme) to support the push for a hospital for Dover.
I have created a petition and I'm sure many more bodies will do so, including Town and Parish Councils.
I will attach the petition to this email and ask you to print off copies of it and fill in your name and address and ask your friends, relations, neighbours, work colleagues etc. to do like wise.
You could also of course send it out to those on your email address groups and lists, asking them to print off the form put their details it and get their friends, relations, work colleagues and neighbours to complete it and so on.
Completed Dover Loyalty Scheme petitions can be returned to the Dover Town Council offices at Biggin Street, Dover.
We were advised at the meeting on Friday that around 25,000 signatures would be needed, but wouldn't it be great if there were 25,000 individual letters - they would carry so much more weight, so if you can, please do write to:

I haven't posted on here for a while, but I have been very busy improving the Loyalty Scheme for card-holders and members.
Here are some recent emails I have sent out - those of you whose email addresses I have, will have seen them already, but those of you who I haven't got, hopefully they will be of interest to you.

If you dine out occasionally, there's a new restaurant opened up in Dover, called Amigos. I'm sure from the name you can guess it's a Mexican restaurant.
It's by the underpass in Dover, at 4 Bench Street; their telephone number is 01304 202540.
I dined there on Monday evening with friends and can honestly say, the food is very, very good. The service is friendly and attentive and it won't make too big a hole in your pocket.
There is a good range of starter and main course dishes; from king prawns or nachos, to potato skins for starters, or fajitas or salmon, to chicken for a main course, it'll be cooked perfectly.
If you're free this Thursday evening (the 2nd.), it's a good night to go as they are having live music there - a young couple from Cuba singing Latin American and Cuban songs - the man plays the guitar, the Lady sings and dances.
A great way to finish off the week (doesn't the weekend start on Friday ?)

"Attitude"
This is a great story, no idea if it's true, but it does show the benefit of a positive attitude. It was sent to me by a Dover Loyalty Scheme card-holder.
"John is the kind of chap you love to hate - always in a good mood
and always has something positive to say. When someone asked him
how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be
twins!' He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the
employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and
asked him, 'I don't get it! - you can't be a positive person
all of the time. How do you do it?' He replied 'each morning
I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today; you can
choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood;
I choose to be in a good mood.'
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim
or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.
'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.
'Yes, it is,' he said. 'Life is all about choices; when you cut
away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how
you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.
You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. It's your choice
how you live your life.'
I reflected on what he said. & soon after, I left the Tower
Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often
thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of
reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious
accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released
from the hospital with rods placed in his back.
I saw him about six months after the accident.
I asked him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
'The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my
soon-to-be born daughter,' he replied. 'Then, as I lay on the
ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live
or I could choose to die. I chose to live'.
'Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?' I asked.
He continued, '...the paramedics were great.
They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me
into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors
and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead
man'. I knew I needed to take action.'
'What did you do?' I asked.
'Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,' said
John. 'She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.'
The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.
I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity''
Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on
me as if I am alive, not dead.'
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of
his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the
choice to live fully.
A positive attitude, after all, is everything."

- Dover Loyalty Scheme article.
This week’s Loyalty Scheme article is really aimed at Loyalty Scheme card-holders. There are many thousands of Loyalty Cards “out there” , but not, it seems, that many being used. Many people see the adverts, articles and promotions on the Loyalty Scheme and its members, but when they go shopping, they either don’t show their card, or don’t ask for their discount. This means that the members of the scheme don’t know that the advertising and marketing is actually working for them and so some leave the scheme because they feel “what’s the point ?”
If you have a Loyalty Scheme card, please do use it, if you don’t wish to take your discount, that’s O.K. but please do let the businesses know you heard about them through the Loyalty Scheme. If you are in a shop that is not a member, ask them why not; I want to promote all of the businesses in Dover, whatever they do – retail shops - gifts, flowers, jewellery, furniture, bedding, butchers etc. Insurance companies, Solicitors, Estate or Letting Agents and of course the pubs, restaurants and café’s in Dover, all of whom need you to shop here and not go elsewhere. We also have some historic sites and attractions that are members – Dover Museum, White Cliffs Boat Tours and Crabble Corn Mill.

This festival is celebrated for five continuous days, with the third day being celebrated as the main Diwali or as 'Festival of Lights'. Fireworks are always associated with this festival. The day is celebrated with people lighting diyas, candles all around their house. Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening to seek divine blessings of Goddess of Wealth. Diwali gifts are exchanged among all near and dear ones."
Come and enjoy the Festival of Light sumptuous meal at the Ramada. The normal cost is £29.95 per person, but if you have a Loyalty-Card you can obtain a discount, bringing the price down to £25.00 per person, but you must mention the Loyalty Scheme when booking and take your card with you.

Dover Loyalty Scheme - Ive got to hand it to the Ramada as they seem to be doing some excellent and different nights up there at Whitfield. One thinks of the ABBA evening and now this Diwali one. Although Roger has explained Diwali its still a bit of a mystery to me so could be worth a visit to find out. Would of course use my Dover Loyalty Card as thats quite a good reduction as listed below.

Yes, the Ramada do often come up with great ideas for events and party nights.
As members of the Loyalty Scheme, they offer a disocunt to card-holders for most if not all of their events, depends on how keenly they're priced.
I am happy to send out "blind" emails to all those on my (17) different email address groups, now I can contact about 1500 to 1600 people about these events and other member-related points of interest.

The first one is at the First and Last pub in East Cliff; I would guess mainly for the younger set as it is described as "Dance/Hard Dance" on the evening of Friday 31st October - 8 till late.
This is a new event at The First and Last, so let's help make it a success for them; there'll be DJ Tony and of course all are welcome. The Pub is open at 7 pm.
The second one is at La Salle Verte; Martin Jonathan will be playing his accoustic guitar with covers in his own unique style, featuring the likes of The Police, Crowded House, The Who, & Simon & Garfunkel on the evening of 13th. of November.
All music evenings at La Salle Verte (as many of you know) come with a meal and a glass of wine included.

Here's a wonderful way to raise funds for great causes - Dover Lions Club are holding a Charitable music Concert evening at Blue-Birds in Snargate Street, Dover, raising money for Pilgrims Hospice and other Dover Lions Charities.
The Railway Swing Band are playing at Blue-Birds in Snargate Street, Dover on Wednesday October 29th.
Arrivals from 7pm - the music starts at 7.30 and at just £10.00 per ticket, it's great value.

The next one is a Carol Service on Tuesday 9th. of December, starting at 7.30pm
The third one is Roger Betts and friends playing their Blues and Rock music on December 28th. starting at 7.30 - all those who've seen and heard Roger before will know what a great night's entertainment this will be.

Many of you will have given input to the Dover Town Council's Corporate Plan, when I sent information round to you about it some time ago. The Town Council are now finalising this with a Consultation Event to discuss the plan with you - the Community of Dover.
Below are details of the event; I do hope you will attend, as it really is your chance to influence how Dover develops.

The consultation via internet for the Council's Draft Corporate plan 2008-11 has now finished. However, the Council intends to hold a consultation event to discuss the plan with the community, incorporating the feedback which we have received.
This will be held at the Town Council offices at 6pm on Thursday 6th November 2008. Tea and Coffee will be served and you will have an opportunity to discuss the proposed plan with Councillors.
This is your opportunity to influence the Town Council's policy - don't miss it !

I am very pleased to be able to tell you about two new members; one is a Business Improvement Consultant - Velocity Consultants, so whether you own a small to medium sized business, or perhaps work in or for one, you will want to know more.
