26 September 2010Promenade Pier Dover 1901.
You will have heard of the new Kittiwake Restaurant I'm sure, up there in beautiful aspiring new town Whitfield..well this picture above is on display there on the wall. In fact there are lots of interesting things on display up there, so worth a look, in between the dining experience. But the picture shown above shows people strolling on a Promenade Pier in Dover in 1901. This was news to me, never knew such a pier existed, or indeed here is another headscratcher, is this picture a fake!? Surely not. Or a mistake? as it looks remarkably like Deal Pier to yours truly. But as a foreign interloper on sacred Dovorian soil, 'twould be interesting to know if it did exist and why is it no longer with us.
Okay I couldnt resist with the one below, clearly a modern day computer manipulation of the same picture and just done for a bit of fun, and no doubt our purists and aficionadoes will shriek with the sheer horror of it all. So forgiveness required! But back to the point in question. Did the pier exist and where exactly was it situated? All answers to this on the thread in the members club.
For more information on this pier and old Dover in general, see our tip top forumite contributor Paul Wells' ( Scotchie) book.
