The Swingate Inn quiz evenings support Dover Lifeboat!

Coxswain Stuart Richardson and members of the Dover’s RNLI crew were pleased earlier this month to visit the Swingate Inn and collect a £387 donation from Landlord Sumit Patel.

The money had been raised at the monthly quizzes held at the Inn since May. The well attended quizzes normally take place around the middle of the month. The next quiz takes place on the 18th October and new teams are very welcome. It costs a £1 per person to enter and there are prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams.

The quizzes are part of a variety of regular events put on by the Swingate’s Team including curry nights on Tuesdays and live jazz on Thursdays.

For more details about any of the events please telephone the Inn on 01304 204043.

When asked why they had chosen to support the RNLI, Mr Patel said:” We at the Swingate understand the hard work the RNLI do and wanted to give them our full support. We are so close to the channel and when we sat down to pick a charity the RNLI was the winner by far. We try to support local charities and events that make a difference. ”

Dover RNLI Deputy Launching Authority Roy Couzens said: “I’d just like to say a big thank you to Sumit and his team at the Swingate. The support we receive from the people and businesses of Dover has always been excellent and with examples, such as the fundraising quizzes at the Swingate, we know that we are still being supported in these difficult times.”

Dover Lifeboat Rescues Six Stranded Divers.

Dover’s volunteer RNLI crew were in action on Saturday afternoon (18th Sept) to a RIB with six divers aboard that had broken down six miles off Dover. Under the command of Deputy Second Coxswain Jon Miell the relief lifeboat ‘Roger and Joy Freeman’ left its berth at 1427hrs and headed out to the 5.5m long RIB.

In calm conditions the lifeboat crew located the stranded craft and reached them less than twenty minutes after leaving the Port’s Western Entrance. Five of the divers were transferred to the Severn class lifeboat whilst the sixth remained aboard the RIB to steer it during the tow to safety. Once the lifeboat’s tow line had been secured the lifeboat headed back to Dover.

Once safely in the outer harbour, due to the low tide, the disabled RIB was handed over to the Port of Dover Police’s RIB and assisted to the harbour’s slipway whilst the lifeboat returned to its berth in the Marina.

Deputy Second Coxswain Jon Miell said: “This rescue went very smoothly in the calm conditions. The divers did the right thing and called for assistance as soon as they realised they were in difficulties. Coincidentally, the Dover Lifeboat Station is holding a Sea Safety Day with particular emphasis on diving safety. The event will take place on 17th October and anyone interested in attending should contact the Station on 01304 204280 for further details and/or to book a place.”

Dover Welcomes the Cream of Cruising in 2011

Building on the success of 2010’s record season, Dover Cruise Port is enjoying a growing reputation as the port of choice for luxury cruise operators offering affordable five-star holidays next year.

Niche operators such as Crystal, Seabourn and Oceania are catering for a renaissance in premium cruising around Northern Europe from Dover. The Hebridean Princess for example only takes a select fifty guests, offering fine wine and dining as it cruises the Western Isles or Northern France. These operators are bringing on board travellers looking for an individual experience - with ships that showcase 21st Century technology alongside the unobtrusive and refined service reminiscent of a bygone era.

One operator spreading the glamour further afield is the world-class Holland America Line which is offering fabulous five-star trips to New York from its homeport, Dover. The port will also be welcoming once again the extremely popular lines; Aida, Ibercruceros, Pullmantur, Fred Olsen, Saga and Princess as well as greeting the Oceania Marina debuting in February 2011 and HAL’s MS Ryndam, on its first visit to the UK.

Kate O’Hara, Head of Commercial & Marketing at the Port of Dover said,
“Dover is carving out a niche as the port that caters for the discerning traveller as well as contributing to the popular growth in European cruising that is winning new converts each season. First-class facilities at the Cruise Terminals and improved transport links are also encouraging new audiences to try a cruise holiday from Dover. It’s promising news that UK Cruise is bucking the trend in the holiday market with over 1.65m expected to have holidayed on board this year.”

Not a lot of people know this.....

But did you know that Dover Cruise Terminal welcomed over 300,000 cruise passengers this year alone..ponder that one if you will! And as we see in the copy above, a bumper year expected next year.
