8 October 2010Tony's Shop
What's happening??
In just a few days I have been at the grand opening, the grand launch, of two new shops here in downtown Dover. Can it be that these are the oft touted green shoots of recovery I see before me, is this the Coalition of new ideas sprightly springing into local action. Whatever the reason anyway, it is great to welcome new business initiatives here in Dover. Yesterday I popped up to Snargate Street to see the physical premises of internet store
www.ModernGent.com and a very pleasant light and airy place it is too, with views out onto Dover Marina.
It is interesting to note that both these new shops were opened by forumites or members of this forum. There used to be the whiff of criticism that it was generally the same people we featured time after time...however, and be that as it may, it is these same guys who are essentially the doers, the local movers and shakers...the people who want to change things, the people who want to see a cleaner a better and a newer Dover.
The latest pictures feature Tony Jayms the owner of both the website and the Snargate Street shop. The top shot shows Tony posing with blazing sunday sunshine behind him, showing two of his oddball items. On the left you have a leather dogs head. It is fully wearable as I understand it, but what you would get up to while wearing it ..well one can only speculate! The right hand side of shot shows a topper with attached wig. Surely an item the likes of Johnny Depp would be proud to call his own. Unusual goods indeed and there's more. Oh the excitement! For a full list, a full range of goods, go to the website
www.ModernGent.com
Second picture shows cool dude Tony Jayms himself outside the newly opened store in Snargate Street.
Let me print the official press release for you
now below, this explains the aims in greater detail.
PB
"An exciting new retail store will be opening in Snargate Street, Dover this weekend. Modern Gent Dover is the creation of successful local entrepreneur Tony Jayms and the Dover store is the first in a planned chain of shops that will showcase the products of UK designers, some of which are available exclusively through Modern Gent.
Tony's vision is to be the leading purveyor of innovative gifts and original products in the world. Tony has been running Modern Gent as a successful online business for 8 years and decided that the time was right to expand into the retail market. Having returned to his hometown after 35 years living away, Tony saw the town's potential as the first site for the retail business and was quick to secure retail premises when these became available.
Modern Gent has a great reputation for outstanding customer service and attention to detail and the retail outlets will share the values and customer-focused ethos of the company.
The products stocked have been selected for their uniqueness and high design values and are not available at any other retail outlets in the area. They also offer great value for money. The shop itself is intended to provide a stimulating and fun retail experience, with plans for exciting window displays, fun competitions and the exhibition of artworks. Modern Gent shall continue to focus on excellence in customer service and satisfaction." ends.

Jenni's Shop!
Thursday saw the official opening of
Country Brides in Castle Street Dover. It was officially opened jointly by both the Mayor of Dover Cllr Sue Jones and the Mayor of Faversham Cllr Anita Walker and both performed their duties in fine style. The ribbon was cut at approximately 6pm thursday evening October 7.
The new entrepreneur is none other than long time Doverforum favourite, the very likeable Jenni Sutton, and as I understand it.. this shop is the only one of its kind in all Dover. So this could be a very astute commercial move. Marriage is still hugely popular and here we have a shop dedicated to this popularity. The bride can get everything she needs right here. Wedding dresses start pricewise from £195 and go ups
wards from there and with lots of those essential accessories available too...tiaras, shoes, veils...
..the list goes on.
The shop is quite large and has a very extensive range of wedding outfits but also gowns and dresses for all occasions. It has a very comfortable area with mirrors to the front and rear where the outfits can be tried on and modelled at will ..and..in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
The picture above features Jenni Sutton centre as she shows Mayor Sue Jones on the righthandside around the shop, Sue was acommpanied as ever by the ever popular Mayoress Ronnie Philpott. Picture below shows Mayor Sue Jones with scissors in hand about to do the necessary ribbon cutting deed. Never argue with a woman with a scissors in her hand...tip there for all future husbands ! Also in the shot and holding the ribbon aloft is the Mayor of Faversham Anita Walker, also there too are the Deputy Mayor of Dover Cllr David Hannent and wife and Deputy Mayoress Linda Hannent, and...last but not least Jenni Sutton herself with assorted others all doing their bit.

Nothing whatsoever to do with weddings this time but am just testing our frontpage in the company of new Labour star Yvette Cooper left. We have been having a slight techno problem so am just testing the water with the future political star.
Latest news is that Yvette has been appointed today to Labour's Shadow Cabinet by Ed Miliband. Her job..Shadow Foreign Secretary. Quite a surprise that as many had tipped her for the role of Shadow Chancellor, as she often speaks for Labour on economic matters. But instead evergreen Allan Johnson has grasped that plum. New leader Ed Miliband continues to surprise everybody. I bet he would make a good poker player.
