The Front Page. - Copy 132 (666,666 - Western Heights, DC Radio, The Cuts!)

20 October 2010

Well wow! we have passed through the 666,666 barrier(22nd October) on our frontpage with not too many difficulties. There wasnt a plague of locusts or anything nearly so grim. However let it be known that earlier in the day I did hear the troubled tormented screams of lost souls. On top of that, the wailing of the banshee in the dead of night was enough to send the hardiest of men scurrying for cover, and indeed overnight my hair turned white...but other than that no adverse affects...so far! PB

Spooky!! 666,666 approaches...

Yes indeed I suddenly spotted this morning that this page is nearing the scary figure of 666,666. See viewing figures top right. Oh dear! What catastrophe is about to befall us all as a consequence...Im not superstitious..honest... ermmm honest.. but nevertheless to be on the safe side I have asked our resident psychic member
Jeane Trend-Hill to give us her take on the situation and here we are....

666 The number of the beast!

666 this number has long been talked about largely from a specific reference in the Bible Revelation 13:18, where it is presented as the key to an intriguing riddle, one set in the broader context of a time of world domination by the beast.

We see barcodes on nearly every product we purchase, but did you know that the bar-code apparently operates on a 666 system; the products we buy contain a 666 on their barcode! Hmm…I’ve never checked personally but who knows!

666 is a triangular number because it stands on a base of 36 it is designated the 36th in the series. But 36 is also triangular (the 8th) - as is every other numerical attribute of 666! I definitely don’t know about that one, math’s has never been my strongest subject!

Organic molecules are based on carbon-12, with 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the nucleus, surrounded by 6 electrons. Err…no, I never knew that either. And if you add up the first six Roman numerals, IVXLCD, the total is, you guessed it, 666. Don’t say you never learn anything on Doverforum!

Some people refuse to have phone numbers or number plates containing 666. There is even a word describing this superstitious phobia — ‘hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia’.

Me well, I can’t say it’s ever bothered me, my camera didn’t explode when I took my 666th photo, my 666th post passed without event and I quite like watching the Omen 666, it’s one of my favourite films.

Now with the front page approaching 666,666 I hope we will all still be here. Now where is that little Irish fella, you know the beast err…I mean boss – Hello PaulB, are you there………is anybody there……………….
Jeane Trend-Hill

Many thanks to Jeane for the piece one. Who's going to be the one to press the button to reach the magic figure. Not me !

Western Heights Preservation Society Mini Open Weekend, Dover, Kent.

October 23rd and 24th 2010

Following the success of the June event, the Western Heights Preservation Society is pleased to announce an additional open weekend 23/24 October 2010, 10am until 5pm.

One of the most important and impressive fortifications in Britain, the Western Heights are a series of strong points linked by miles of ditches on the western hilltop above Dover. They were originally begun during the American War of Independence, were strengthened during the Napoleonic Wars and updated and strengthened again in the mid nineteenth century.

Over the weekend, parts of the Drop Redoubt, a large and impressive fortress, and the Grand Shaft, a unique 19th century triple staircase, will be opened to the public to allow rare access. Once again historical interpretation will be provided by the First Footguards

Entry to The Grand Shaft will be free of charge, with a charge of just £2.50 for adults for entry to the Drop Redoubt... accompanied children go FREE. All monies made from the opening of the Redoubt are ploughed back into helping preserve the fort and allowing future access.

Visitors are asked to keep in mind that the site is a historic fortress opened especially for this event, physical access to the fort is limited and sadly access by wheelchair users is not possible or indeed people with prams or push chairs. Appropriate footwear is also recommended for anyone wishing to visit the Drop Redoubt or Grand Shaft.

The WHPS are grateful to English Heritage for permission to open the Drop Redoubt and Dover District Council for access to the Grand Shaft and Grand Shaft Barracks site. Ends.

Info following on Dover Community Radio (DCR) who were awarded an impressive grant at the Kent County Council's ' You Decide ' event at St Mary's Parish Centre, Dover on 15th October 2010.....read on...

The station had its first display put together by members of the DCR team and would like to thank all those involved. The Local Schemes Grant is a local funding initiative to give grants to local organisations to implement community projects. We were attending the 'Dover Town' division headed by local KCC Councillor Nigel Collor.

Chairman of DCR Albert Thorp and DCR's Membership Secretary Tom Crawley took to the stand in the main hall to present a speech appealing to those in attendance to award us funding towards our community media ambitions. We were applying for £3,000 from the scheme to help us bring a community radio station to Dover. The funding awarded was a staggering £2921 and we would like to thank all those who attended and voted for us.

A number of other community projects were also there and we congratulate those who were awarded funding and would like to wish all the projects in attendance good luck for the future. We would also be able to publicise your community project so please do get in touch with us. The funding we have been awarded will go towards undertaking a 'trial' radio service for Dover in 2011 to cover the Dover Regatta and Dover Town Carnival in July 2011.

It will also be used to provide media training and work to our premises at the Phoenix Club to bring a media training centre to the town. DCR are hopeful this can now be achieved and will be looking into premises to broadcast their trial radio service in July 2011. The original broadcast earmarked for December 2010 was posponed due to an inability to obtain funding in time. Now with the backing of Kent County Council we are sure we can bring community radio to Dover. Throughout the summer we have been training members and covering local events for our pod-cast section on our
website. These pod-casts will also be used on our trial service next year to provide an insight into Dover life. We would be interested in hearing from any local groups, people and organisations who would wish to be involved with DCR - you can email us on info@dovercommunityradio.co.uk for more information.

Our next public meeting is taking place on Monday 25th October 2010 at 7pm at the Phoenix Social and Railway Club
where we will be having a talk from local broadcaster Danny Lawrence. Our website is at: www.dovercommunityradio.co.uk - Ends.

Picture shows KCC Councillor Nigel Collor presenting the cheque. Also in pic from Left to Right are...
DCRs Tom Crawley, Albert Thorp, and youngsters Marc Thorp and David Thorp and of course KCC Councillor Nigel Collor.

The above two items are press releases from the organisations concerned.
Send us your press releases and we will do our best to include them. Paul on dover7@msn.com.

Loads of Cuts!..but cheer up everyone..

"We're all in this together"!

.. arent we??

We have just seen the worst defence cuts for more than 30 years. They called it a Strategic Review of Defence Spending but even our own Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral Lord Boyce, said in the House of Lords yesterday and in an item shown on TV last night, that there is nothing "strategic" about it!! These are cuts plain and simple with cohesion and strategy gone out the window!

So yesterday it was the Military, but today it is us, our turn..the lowly proletariat. Time for us to feel the pain. Stand by for that, it's all on your TV later.

This military situation however gives me the opportunity to show this picture of a Royal Naval vessel slowly drifting by our harbour the day before yesterday. This sight is probably going to get even rarer. Soon the combined ferry operators will have more ships than the Royal Navy. But what sort of vessel is it....Is it a frigate or a gunboat? ...I dont know these things but maybe one of our nautical chappies can fill us in. I thought initially it may have come to protect us from the striking French but perhaps it was just doing a sad farewell sail past.

Latest: Now that we've got the Military out of the way. The axe swings on us lowly proles.

Yes we all watched the TV with baited breath, waiting for the axe to fall, and lovably smug chancellor Boy George swung it with all his might, bringing us the biggest cuts in public services since World War II. The government themselves quite comfortably predict job losses that will affect 500,000 people, following this announcement today. Much as is the case with vast sums of money... after a while the figure gets so large it becomes meaningless...and so perhaps to some are such large quantities of job losses, but it is worth remembering that each job loss represents a family hitting hard times, hitting the financial buffers. There are cuts to every conceivable aspect of daily life and affecting everybody.

Labour's personable Shadow Chancellor Alan Johnson said today's review "was a reckless gamble with peoples lives " and it certainly looks that way. I'm sure the present government has calculated the un-employment benefit payout needed for all those jobless people in the years to come. They (the government) have indicated confidently that the free market economy will create new jobs. Optimistic. It may just work in high flying London over time, but when for example did the free market economy create any new jobs in Dover?
