It Was a Brave and Brilliant Effort...But....It's All Over for Dover!
You will know by now about the fabulous effort our local football team Dover Athletic put into reaching the third round of the FA Cup. It was a huge and sterling effort and it really captured the imagination of the town here prior to Christmas and recently into this New Year of 2011.
Our Forum was buzzing with the excitement…as we have more than a few avid enthusiasts for the club onboard here at Doverforum, and all contributed greatly to the chatter. Optimism was huge, even guys who dont normally gamble were placing bets on them to win... but could they beat a top league team? Huddersfield Town are very near the top of Division One in the Football League, so Dover were up against it this time with seriously tough opposition.
Sadly it wasn’t to be.. there was no dream ending to the great story. Huddersfield, cheered on by their home fans, put two goals past Dover within eight minutes. Although the Dover team played well after that, they couldn’t pull back that heartbreaking lead.
However the Dover supporters, and a fabulous 1600 of them made the 540 mile round trip, were both happy and sad at the same time. Sad to lose but thrilled that the team had performed so well.
“The boys dun good!”
Paul Harrison, Chairman of the Dover Athletic Supporters Club, said : There was around 1600 Dover supporters and considering that it was a 540 mile round trip it was a fantastic turnout. We organised 9 official coaches through the Supporters Club carrying 500 and leaving at 7am getting back at 11pm. The coaches were provided by Bayliss Travel from Deal who did a fantastic job for us. It was a great day and considering Huddersfield’s position near the top of Division 1 to go there and lose 2-0 is a great achievement and of course this follows on from beating both Gillingham and Aldershot.
He added I also had a phone call yesterday from the police liaison officer at Huddersfield Police asking me to pass on that our supporters behaviour was fantastic and that they were a credit to football. With over 1600 travelling and the police officer calling to say that, well it is a great statement for our supporters..
The pictures show the day out from beginning to end and were taken by Paul Harrison. You can tell how formidable the opposition were by the sheer size and polished look of their league level stadium. Many thanks to forumite Paul Harrison for the pictures and information. Thanks to Howard McSweeney for the initial idea.
