Cliff Fall: Saturday morning found us all staring at a sudden whitening of the cliffs here in Dover. Yes indeed. Dover's famous White Cliffs are now even whiter than they were before, as a huge section has come tumbling thundering down into the sea below. As you can see in the picture left, it all happened quite near to the docks. One of our forumites asked if there is a contingency plan in the docks for such a situation, should the fall happen within those parameters.

With a fall on this scale it would be difficult to have a contingency plan for.
Note the figure in the picture above. Standing there, teethering on the very edge as this person is... is not a good idea. You may think you are safe but just look at the scale of it all. That piece could just as easily go. The huge amount of recent rain has clearly softened the cliffs and further falls could happen. Stay away from the edge. See also our Forum. PB.

Lowry-like figures moving about a day or so ago in the blinding spring sunlight of Dover's award winning seafront. Give the populace a bit of sunshine and away they go to enjoy the facilities..Look how clean it all is, no litter, and nothing out of place.

As you can see there...Outstanding Kent Police Staff runner up went to Dover's Karen Griffiths.

Karen is a Retail Crime Initiative Intelligence Co-ordinator and is the driving force behind the Dover Partnership Against Crime. The scheme aims to prevent offences in Dover, Deal and Sandwich and has 150 members, including retailers, licensees, taxi companies, transport firms and local attractions. Each member has a two-way radio which enables them to communicate with each other, the police and the CCTV control room. The system helps to catch criminals who are issued with an exclusion order and banned from members’ premises for a year.

Karen is vigilant and targets anyone who commits crime in the town. Her work has led to a reduction in anti-social behaviour, helped to find lost children, reunite owners with lost bags, purses and keys, and tourists who have forgotten where they have parked their cars.

Karen also co-ordinates the Three Strikes scheme that tackles drink related anti-social behaviour.

Dover Partnership Against Crime has grown significantly from its humble beginnings and this is due to Karen’s enthusiasm, organisational skills, innovative drive and determination. What makes Karen extra special is that around two years ago she suffered a life threatening head injury and underwent lengthy rehabilitation learning simple tasks all over again. Despite this she continues to deliver an outstanding performance.

Ann Barnes, Chair of Kent Police Authority said:
‘I regularly hear about good work from the frontline and it always makes me very proud indeed. But there are remarkable acts of particular merit which warrant extra recognition and the award ceremony was our opportunity to acknowledge that excellent work, to take a step back and to simply say thank you. We are really lucky here in Kent to have such excellent public servants all of whom do such an excellent job in the public safety arena. There were some incredible stories and congratulations to all our winners and runners up and our incredibly generous sponsors – BT, Kier Construction, Kent Peoples Trust, and Southern Water – who made the night possible.’

In fading light late yesterday afternoon, after the service was held at St Mary's Church to remember the 193 people who lost their lives in the Herald of Free Enterprise tragedy 25 years ago, the dignitaries moved across to the new memorial gardens on Dover Seafront. Here the Bishop of Dover Rt Rev Trevor Willmott, complete with traditional ceremonial staff, blessed the ground in a solemn and moving ceremony. The pictures here tell their own story. In the background just behind the Bishop you can see the Mayor of Dover Cllr Ronnie Philpott and in the purple hat Cllr Sue Nicholas, the Chairman of Dover District Council. Several film crews were in attendance to cover the event for regional television. PB
