4 February 2010All Change again
for
LD Lines!
The ship you see in the picture on the left is called the Norman Spirit. It took over relatively recently on the Dover to Boulogne route operated of course by LD LINES. With much sadness it replaced the sleek and popular seacat, the Norman Arrow. But now...more change! This ship too is being replaced.. replaced on the Boulogne route by a much duller merchant vessel called Brave Merchant, which was in turn once operated out of Dover by Norfolkline. One hopes dear reader you are following all this.
It has been announced that LD Lines are to join forces with Transeuropa Ferries on the Ramsgate to Ostend route. This is a new departure point for LD Lines.
They are as a consequence taking the Norman Spirit ( shown above) away from Dover, to operate on that new stretch of water. The ship will be renamed the Ostend Spirit and will operate from Ramsgate.
Where does all this leave the Dover to Boulogne sealink. Is it slipping down the pecking order? The ferry now scheduled to be used on this route seems to indicate that this much heralded Dover to Boulogne initiative hasnt quite taken off in the way hoped for, by both LD Lines and the people of Dover....and indeed the people of Boulogne.
Also see the knowledgeable thread in the Members Club Forum called 'Boulogne and LD LINES'.

Safeguarding the legacy of
Holocaust Survivors.
Our MP, Gwyn Prosser pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to honour those who perished in the Holocaust.(See pic on left.)
With 27th January marking the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to give MPs the opportunity to remember those who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust - and to support a ‘Legacy of Hope’, learning from Survivors’ experiences to help create a future free from hatred and prejudice.
In doing so, Gwyn paid tribute to those remarkable individuals who survived the appalling events of the Holocaust and have since dedicated their lives to educating younger generations about the dangers of allowing persecution and intolerance to take hold in society.
Gwyn said:
“In November I visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp and this convinced me of the duty we have to honour the dead and the survivors and to pass on the lessons of the Holocaust to future generations. Holocaust Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Holocaust Survivors, to commemorate the millions who died under Hitler’s regime and to commit to a future free from racism and discrimination.”
Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said:
“We are delighted that Gwyn is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day again this year. Remembering and learning about the Holocaust is more important now than ever before. This year’s theme, ‘The Legacy of Hope’ highlights the important role young people have to play in taking the Survivors’ mantle forward and educating their peers about the Holocaust.
EXTRA NOTE:The Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) was established in 1988 to educate young people from every ethnic background about the Holocaust and the important lessons to be learned for today. HET works in schools, universities and in the community to raise awareness and understanding of the Holocaust, providing teacher training and so on..

Ladies Networking Evening at Ramada Hotel Tuesday 2nd February .
A great evening was had by all us ladies at the Ramada Hotel on Tuesday night. The guest speaker for the evening was Jane Wallace from The House of Colour and she was perhaps the highlight of the evening. Jane explained in great and fascinating detail how you can inject some colour into your life, by marrying your individual style with colour shades to match your personality and looks, all based around a seasonal theme. Don't ask me to explain the technical details but it was very informative and all the ladies present were on the edge of their seats catching up on tips for make-up and style. I enjoyed the whole evening which included an excellent Indian buffet and refreshments courtesy of The Ramada Hotel.
There were ladies from a variety of business fields, from wedding functions, helicopter charters, restaurant and catering, hairdressing, manufacturing etc in fact covering a wide strata of working life, so a lot of networking went on. I wish Michelle Sheppard of The Ramada Hotel all the best with future Ladies Evenings which gave us hardworking gals an opportunity to let our hair down and enjoy ourselves. …after all the networking of course.
A nice finishing touch to the evening was a Prize draw where Georgette Rapley won a Romantic Candlelit Dinner for two at the Ramada Hotel for Valentine's Night.

Our Local Conservative Candidate
Charlie Elphicke
visits
Pitman Training.
Pitman Training, nestling quietly in a corner of Market Square, is one of Dover's real success stories. This year the business is 10 years old and during that time under the guiding hand of Paula Elliot, they have literally trained thousands of people in all sorts of worthwhile office skills. Those on the courses have acquired Diplomas at Pitman Training in areas such as IT, PA secretarial, Payroll, Bookeeping, and so on, and these Diplomas and the associated acquired skill levels have improved the prospects of the many who have passed through the doors in those aforementioned 10 years.
As Paula said when speaking about the current depressed economic climate " The safest thing people can do with their money these days is to invest in themselves!" and who can argue with that. Paula went on "People who invest in themselves get on, it's as simple as that"
Charlie Elphicke was very impressed with the setup at Pitman's. He is of course in the middle of fighting an election campaign which could be a close run thing here in Dover. Our resident MP Gwyn Prosser has fought and won a number of elections, so is clearly a popular MP and Charlie has his work cut out. Last week the two clashed over the Port Privatisation situation, both on television, and indeed on this very website..yes they did indeed clash although in fact both men do not want the Port privatised. They may NOT be singing in harmony, but the hymn they are singing is from roughly the same hymnsheet, with regard to the Port anyway. Charlie also has a strong long term vision on how Dover should and could develop over the years ahead to achieve both more jobs and greater prosperity. More on that another time.
While at Pitman Training, Charlie presented the latest Diploma to Diana Roach. Diana, age 44, was formerly a dispensing optician and is clearly seeking a new career path as her new Diploma is in MS Office computer skills, which she achieved in double quick time. PB.
