Cameron Calling!
The Conservative leading light David Cameron, in the midst of the toughest Election campaign in years, took time out yesterday from his highly hectic schedule to call two local girls Briony Boland and Saskia Wadsworth-Smith. The main man himself telephoned them here in Dover yesterday and spent 20 minutes chatting with them in the early afternoon. This came about following their appearance on GMTV yesterday morning, in the slot of 'First Time Voters'. The girls spoke of their concerns about Education, and as both are students it's not a surprising topic. They spoke too of the NHS, which is of particular interest to Briony, a second year med student at UCL, who is about to be unleashed on the wards of Britain next year complete with white coat and stethoscope!
Before the phonecall Mr Cameron had earlier tried to answer their concerns in an interview live on air with John Stapleton on the GMTV programme, nevertheless the girls were a little disappointed in his response and said so later when the TV crew re-engaged with them through the helpful interviewing by ever popular Kate Garraway. Mr Cameron saw that they had been disappointed and hence the phone call later. Naturally enough being called later by Mr Cameron on the phone is more than a touch gobsmacking.. but by all accounts they handled it well. Whether he convinced them to vote Conservative is a matter for them and the Polling Booth at this time. The girls are to be featured again by GMTV it seems, closer to the Election, when they will go to London to sit on the famous GMTV sofa. Well I never! PB.
If you are a first time voter like the girls featured above and left, make sure you are registered...see all the following information on how to go about it. Its easy peasy...get involved, make sure your voice is heard.

As you can imagine this is a hectic if fraught time for the Prime Minister, but Gordon Brown and wife Sarah took some time out to meet local long serving Labour MP Gwyn Prosser and the Rees family from Deal. This family from Deal were amongst the invited guests of Gordon Brown at a ‘Local Heroes’ reception in 10 Downing Street last week (24/3/10). The Prime Minister held the reception to acknowledge the work done by local volunteers in their communities and to thank the families of Britain’s servicemen and women for the essential support they provide.
Dover & Deal’s MP, Gwyn Prosser, who accompanied the family said afterwards:
“Angela’s (Mrs Rees, seen here with the young Dominic and Cheska) husband has served in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan – everyone applauds the work done by our brave troops overseas but the families of servicemen and women also deserve the nation’s gratitude and I believe they are all local heroes."

..On hearing the election has been called Gwyn said...
“Tuesday’s Election Day announcement was probably the worst kept political secret in history, but it’s good to have the date officially confirmed and for my Labour team it signals a stepping-up of our campaign which has already been running for many weeks. In fact my local Labour Party campaigns week in and week out – not just at elections. As the local candidate I’m able to be out and about just about every weekend of the year - running my Street Stalls in Deal and Dover and knocking on doors all over the constituency. This will be the fifth General Election I’ve fought for the Dover & Deal seat but this time we start the campaign as the underdogs, it’s going to be a really tough fight but we are up for it!”
