Mayor Making
preview...
Ahh the last days of a Mayoral reign must be sad for some, all that pomp and all that circumstance drawing to an abrupt close. A year of high office serving your community, whisked away at a stroke.
All across the region many Mayor Makings are taking place, bringing in new personnel for fresh impetus. Here in Dover we don’t have quite a new face for fresh impetus, but we do have Mayor Sue Jones being re-installed for another year. The great and grand installation occasion, laced with all that high flying hullabaloo, takes place this coming Friday at the Town Hall.
Most agree that Mayor Sue has had a very good year indeed. We ourselves have had excellent feedback stating same, from our wide-ranging DoverForum membership. Her Deputy Mayor in this outgoing year was Jan Tranter , a former Mayor herself, and Jan carried out her duties with some style.

I was up close at hand when Jan attended her last, or near last, function , which was the Mayor’s Civic Awards at Sandwich. There she said goodbye to some of the old cronies on the Mayor’s circuit, one of whom was jovial Joe Trussler the Mayor of Sandwich , seen here with Jan having a farewell hug, as Joe also steps down. It was a good opportunity to snap a few snaps in the heat of the frenetic frivolities.
Replacing Jan this year as Deputy Mayor here in Dover is none other than fellow Doverforum lifer and all round convivial 'good egg' man about town ..one David Hannent esq. It is unusual, is it not, to have a Mayoral appointment granted to someone outside the Labour group, but it has happened this year quite quite sensationally and all probably due to public demand. One hears though....but it cant be true, whispers of rasping rumblings and grave grumblings in local Labour high places…as another top job goes for a Burton. First the PM, then the MP, then the Deputy Mayor..gadzooks where will it all end!?
Given a fair wind under our sails we will have pictures of the new Mayoral inauguration following soon after Friday night.
Pictures: Top shot shows glamourpuss Jan Tranter in fond embrace with ruddy cheeked Joe Trussler. Deputy Mayor of Dover meets Mayor of Sandwich, but now alas with an all fond goodbye. The second picture down shows the Deputy Mayor having her chain of office assembled about her person by the amiable Jim Peacock, the Town Council driver of the official car.

3 funding streams are now available in 2010/11
for projects in the Dover area.
The 3 grants are:
Member Community Grant
Each KCC Councillor has £10,000 to allocate to projects in their area (or that benefit the community in their area).
The KCC Member Community Grant is for support to local community projects. Past examples have included funding for a festival, purchase of equipment and lighting/security costs.
Who can apply for a Member Community Grant?
· We welcome applications from all types of organisations and groups. We do, however, insist that the application comes from an organisation or a group with a current bank account.
· We do not accept applications from individuals (for example for personal sponsorship) or from party political groups.
· We will consider applications from religious groups, but the application must show that the project will bring wider community benefit.
Local Schemes Grant
The KCC Local Schemes Grant is for support to revenue or minor capital projects.
o Example of Capital costs – in general terms any expenditure which leads to the acquisition of a fixed asset (land, buildings, plant, machinery, vehicles etc.) or increases the life or market value of a fixed asset can constitute expenditure for capital purposes.
o Example of Revenue costs – all other expenditure, normally considered to be day to day running costs of a business/organisation.
The pot of money available to Dover has been split between the seven members so they can allocate it to projects in their area. Each Member has a total of £9,771 to allocate.
Small Community Capital Projects Fund
Dover District Council and Kent County Council have allocated £61,400 to the five Dover District Neighbourhood Forums to award small capital grants for community projects.
Small Capital grants of up to £2,500 are available to all types of organisations and groups across the district.
This year the Dover District Neighbourhood Forums are piloting Participatory Budgeting (PB) as a way to allocate the Small Community Capital Projects (SCCP) grant fund available. PB is an innovative way of allocating resources and directly involves local people - residents, community groups and representatives of all parts of the community - voting on grant applications and making decisions on how the grant money is spent on projects in their own area. More details on this will be sent out shortly.
