Women Rowers set off at a Belting Pace...
Monday May 24: We caught an item on the KentOnLine website about female rowers tackling the channel as soon as conditions were right, and as we can all see today, conditions are very nice and very right. Dont have any real info on this event but just caught it all happening quietly this morning monday about 7.30am.. about 20 minutes ago as I write. And quietly is the word...no hullabaloo send off, no brass band playing, and no television crews, not that yours truly noticed anyway. Good luck to their effort. They plan to raise £3000 for the Dover Branch of the National Autistic Society. The journey is expected to take 5 hours.
Tuesday May 25: Latest news.. is that the girls made it in fine style and quicker than expected in 4 hours 21 mins, according to Kentonline. Well done to them for a super effort. PB

Mayor
Making
2010
After another exciting but relatively uneventful night at the Town Hall, we have emerged safely without blood on the carpet but with a new Mayor and a new Deputy Mayor in place. Cllr Sue Jones who was a successful Mayor last year, has been re- installed with a good majority. Considering the difficulty during this particular evening last year, her tenure certainly turned out better than one might have expected. The surprise this year, as we mentioned previously, was in the Deputy Mayor role, and here the voice of the Independents, Cllr David Hannent, easily won through replacing the outgoing Jan Tranter. Although the names had been pre selected, in as much as one can understand these things, there is always the possibility of an upset on the night. But without much ado and with just a small gaggle of dissenters, the names above were safely installed in place. David Hannent expects this to be his last year in politics so he will certainly go out on a high note as Deputy Mayor, if indeed he quits at all. Even though he mentioned this last night in his acceptance speech, and has done so previously, he may be encouraged to stay by his volume of support.
As ever there was a very good turnout for the event, but although having said that, there were a surprising number of empty seats amongst the invitees, which seems a shame. But an excellent turnout of the great and the good though, with assorted Mayors from other towns attending. There was quite a few Doverforum Members too lurking in the shadows, and one or two were even seen enjoying the nibbles after the ceremonials took place. We have some more pictures too which we will add soon.
Alas my notes and details from the event have for the moment gone awol.. but I blame this on an extended evening later in The White Horse...but a small price to pay, as one has to do one's duty supporting the local taverns in their hour of need. PaulB
Top Picture shows the Jones family posing in fine style in the Mayor's Parlour later. Pic Paul Boland.
Directly below the Hannent family are doing the same thing. Pic Colette Boland.
As mentioned, we will have more pictures later. And here we are......
David Hannent, our all new Deputy Mayor, his Deputy Mayoress Linda Hannent, and their daughter Victoria, line up in dignified style to meet the invitees as they exit the main hall..but whats this!!... already hovering in the wings is none other than the News Editor of the Dover Express, Kathy Bailes, with pen in hand as sharp as a dragons tooth, waiting to get the lowdown.
Whats going on here!!? Yes its tip top Forumite and renowned Blogger Barry Williams, having his fancy tickled by two adoring females, and all three are clearly enjoying the process. On the left is Colette Boland and on the righthandside Una Mills. It is rumoured that this kind of thing goes on after a glass or two of the wicked grape but we cannot confirm this at the time of going to press!

On the left we have the newly re-installed Mayor again, and this may have been her thousandth picture on the night, posing with the controversial Cameron Macsween who is head honcho at the Chamber of Commerce these days. On the right from Bruges Belgium, is Jean Marie De Plancke, Gemeenteraaslid of Bruges, not entirely sure what that means but certainly a dignitary all the way from continental Europe and accompanied by attractive lady from same place, we may have more info on her later as my notes are currently awol as mentioned before..also in the shot is the lovely Jan Tranter outgoing Deputy Mayor and former Mayor of Dover.

On the left here we have the long serving and hard working Cllr Ronnie Philpott who remains in the role of Mayoress again, seen here with her family and all enjoying the occasion. On the right we have more fun filled forumites enjoying the fab frivolities later...Andrew Stucken, Jeanette Harper, who many will know from The White Horse and as head of the LCRF writes a column in the Dover Express, and of course Barry Williams again. Thats all Folks! Paul Boland
