28 May 2009Famed Forumite Marek leaves Dover!
Marek's leaving Do:
The party was scheduled for 5pm on a balmy warm summer day. And as is the case with all these things, the mother and father of all storms broke out right on schedule..yes you've guessed it, at 5pm. Fortunately we had a trio of canopy coverage to keep the worst of the weather out, but had one or two scary moment as the thunder crashed and the lighning flashed, right over head. All we were short off was an attack of sharks from the River Dour flowing less than gently by.
What Marek didnt know was that Doverforum had arranged this heavenly send-off on his behalf. As some of our members are well connected with the higher echelons of stratospheric religion, this mega spectacular was fixed up with the gods beforehand and one heck of a display was delivered.
Bravely we huddled with wartime resolve under the tented mini-village, yet soon we began to rally and in no time at all the drinks were flowing, and the food was being avariciously gobbled. It was a great array of drinks and food for sure. Everything from real curry and rice served hot, to the more humble but delicious sausage roll.
Where all the booze came from I dont know, but Im still 'pie eyed' this morning.I better stop now before I burst into song....Just to add a many thanks to Marek for all his input on Doverforum over the years.
The Top Picture: Linda Hannent had the idea of doing a collage of forumites for Marek to take away with him to Jersey, where he begins his new life with wife and daughter.Linda did a beautiful job and must have spent hours doing it...everybody from Kathy Bailes to Mary Graham, from Mike Webb to Jeane Trend-Hill to Paul Watkins are all on there. That's Marek of course in the centre of the picture above, surrounded by familiar well wishers. As you can see the picture looks like it was taken late at night, not a bit of it, this was some of the party group bravely coping with the dark brooding Armageddon-style conditions.
Next Picture down: Shows David Hannent, at whose venue the event took place, making a grand welcome speech that was very funny. Much mirth and hilarity followed as it was enjoyed by all..and it was rendered even funnier still by a glass of delicious sparkling champagne passed around beforehand.
The picture on the left shows Marek's lovely wife Marites and lovely daughter Natascha enoying the occasion. The pic on the right shows old cronie forumites of long standing Keith Sansum and yours truly PaulB trying to dodge the swirling rain while having a glass or two of the wicked grape.
If some of these pictures are looking a little orange its because I accidently left the camera dial on "Vivid Colours" which certainly lives up to its name. The camera crew in operation are shown here. left to right...Georgette Rapley, Mrs Mitchell alias 'Humphy' with Canon, Tom 'Guzzler' Mitchel. John Goodwin. Juliana, and ColetteB doing some snapping with her Hewlett Packard.
The Winning Shot by Colette B: Not only can Colette organise parties but she is a dab hand with her little aforementioned Hewlett Packard too. THis lovely shot is of the two former Dover Carnival princesses, little Jorja and little Natascha, who are putting a brave face on proceedings despite the adverse conditions. Well done Colette with that one- a winner!
Well I guess we better end with these last ones although there are many more. So Im leaving out regulars like Jan Tranter, Nigel Collor, Phil Eyden, Ian Lillford and a brace of others. Left above there is Mandie Sehmbi who runs the DCAL enterprise. DCAL put on our carnival every year and of course also run the Miss Dover contest. Looks like we will be having another party on that day too..the 4th of July. On the right handside above you can see Marek flashing the Jersey £1 pound note given to him by Cllr John H Goodwin. Great fun idea John.See John in the picture above. Colette also gave a picture of Dover Castle to Marites to remind her of her days in Dover. Very rare, in fact unique, to have one of Doverforum members actually leaving Dover and saying goodbye.
The picture on the left shows the latest crop of brightly enthusiastic DCAL girls. That's Miss Dover in the centre. Lets hope they have a very pleasant year.PB
