30 May 2009Councillor Hannent to
Quit Politics!
Well known town councillor David Hannent has decided to call a halt to his political life. The likeable councillor who has been 'in office' for more than six years has become disillusioned. He wont use the word disillusioned himself but prefers the more softer term "jaded". He was stung by the shenanigans of the recent Mayor-Making and the sheer frustration of not being able to make any inroads with his Alliance group of Independents. Because they are smaller in number, than say the Labour group, they find it difficult to make a difference.
An example of the frustration of office reared its head at the recent notoriously ugly Mayor-Making. The squabbling that took place over the position of Mayor was seen as unpalatable in many quarters.
Mr Hannent had been nominated for Deputy Mayor this year, and indeed a number of times previously too, but because of the voting setup where the Labour group in effect decides who becomes Mayor and Deputy Mayor, his appointment to either post was never going to happen. This year, although nominated, he stood aside and Jan Tranter was nominated unopposed. Jan Tranter has previously been Mayor of Dover.
Many felt that David would have made a great Deputy Mayor or even sparkled in the role of 'Mr Mayor' itself, and with some style too, but no, the same few pass the mantle of office to each other year after year. This is not the reason David is quitting, being an Independent means being Mayor was never an option, but it highlights the general frustration of being unable to progress your ideas as you would like.
David will now take on a new role as President of the Deal Rotary Club where he feels he can "do some good". He was previously President of Dover Rotary Club. He will though continue to raise funds for the Independents at the Town Council. He will step down at the next election. We all lose out when good men turn their backs on politics. PB
