Ladies Pamper Night
at the Town Council

Report and pictures by Colette Boland

......Here Come the Girls!

A Great time was had by the lovely ladies of Dover wednesday night at the Dover Town Council Offices. Trainee Students from South Kent College were able to put their training to the test on 'live' models with the following Beauty Treatments... Manicures, Pedicures, Indian Head Massages, Makeovers, in other words 'The Works'. There were many new and familiar faces who started the evening looking great and left feeling refreshed and even more glamorous than ever. This was a Pamper Evening with a difference with all proceeds going to the Mayor's Goodwill Fund. There was wine and nibbles for all the ladies for their delight and delictation as they relaxed and literally put their feet up, laid back, and let the professionals take over.

Smiling faces were everywhere, and in one particular case, three generations being fussed over at once, as in our soon to be Mayor Sue Jones, Mum Margaret and Daughter Suzi. The evening was the first of many with the students being supervised by their Lecturers and really enjoying themselves as they put all their hard work into practice. The evening was rounded off with a raffle with lots of prizes on offer including a Pamper Day at South Kent College!

This was just the first of many special themed evenings at the Town Council offices, many thanks to the staff who made sure all went along smoothly and of course the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and many others.

The Pictures: Top shot shows glamourous Mayor Elect Sue Jones enjoying a big hug from lovely daughter Suzi. Both girls are having a big september this year. Sue will be celebrating her 40th and daughter Suzi her 21st. Partytime anyone!!

Picture below shows 'Lady' Linda Hannent, Cllr Jan Tranter, and Cllr Ronnie Philpott, all enjoying the wonderful pampering. You can tell these girls like a bit of pampering. No doubt all will be clamouring for more very soon!

Dover Carnival
Selection Night.

At the centre of this bevy of multicoloured beauties is the new Miss Dover, Fiona Rosser. Fiona is a student at the St Edmund's School here in Dover and was delighted with her win. A grand night was had by all at this highly successful annual event. I wasnt able to get there myself but have had the following words in from my man on the spot, Barry Wadsworth-Smith.

"On sunday night the town hall was packed to the rafters with Miss Dover contestants, Mums, Dads, friends and relatives. It was all great fun, and particularly enjoyable to see the visiting courts giving their support to Dover, with everyone saying their tearful goodbyes to the outstanding outgoing court of 2008. The DCAL Court of 2008, who had a highly successful year (we featured all their trophies last week or so and the pictures can still be seen in the ALL RECENT FEATURES section), had a great time singing along whilst playing plastic bright pink guitars to Status Quo's 'Here We Go, Here We Go, and Here we Go' and the Senior Court sang the hit song 'Oh Mandie', to solid dependable organiser Mandie Sehmbi of course.
Yes a great evening was had by all, Congratulations to DCAL and also the new Court of 2009, Rosebud, Juniors and Seniors." BWS

The Departure of
the Dover Express.

Ah well now we couldnt let the week go past without drawing attention to the departure of our beloved organ, the Dover Express.
Yes indeed the newshounds from the High St have rolled up their rapid fire Remingtons, packed up their filing cabinets, and with pencils sharpened have headed westwards to the fabtastic Folkestone. This cardinal sin has been committed in the past few days, thereby abandoning a zillion years of tradition of newspapers in Dover. They now no longer have an office in the town. The Dover Mercury did much the same thing recently too. Of course both newspapers intend to continue to produce a Dover edition so good luck to them with that, and long may it continue.

But will it be the same without our lovably rogueish newshounds on the johnny spot? These are the dire days of economic pain, and the giant conglomerate head offices are feeling the pinch. The same regionalisation has happened to local TV news too..it's now barely local. One sighs for former glorious times, for times of plenty!

The Pictures: Yes we just had to use a couple of pictures to send the guys on their way. The top shot was taken at the Doverforum Christmas Party where a good time was had by all...and here we have the tall, dark and brooding but very pleasant presence of Yam( the Man ) Zendera. That's him on the left. The more compact, more bijou fella on the right, is the welsh sheepshearing wordsmith, ace man Rhys Griffiths. Roving Reporters both. In the centre decorating the picture very nicely, is Briony Boland.

The pictures on the left is of Kathy Bailes, Community Editor. This is Kathy's new sleek look, very much in the Anna Ford newscaster style. A new look, a new image, for the fabtastic Folkestone. Gone are her long locks, gone are her cascading tresses, they now lie abandoned on some anonymous hairdresser's floor. Kathy is an excellent member of this Forum of course.
To be serious for a moment though, sad to lose the presence of the Dover EXpress after 150 years, but good luck to them all, they're all good guys above. PB

Mayor Diane Smallwood rings the Zeebrugge Bell.

The picture on the left shows Mayor Diane Smallwood, in one of her last engagements, ringing the Zeebrugge Bell on the balcony of the Town Hall. This annual bell ringing event follows the moving ceremony for St George's Day at both the Town Hall and the cemetary of St James, a ceremony that pays respect to the Dover Patrol, those heroes of legend, who carried out that dark and dangerous raid against the Port Of Zeebrugge on 23 April 1918 during the Great War. Zeebrugge was of course heavily occupied at the time, and heavily fortified. Bombing had failed to make a dent in this fortification, hence the need for the difficult raid. This ceremony is a yearly mark of respect to the personnel who carried out this daring mission of valour. Heroes all.
Many thanks to Terry Nunn for the excellent picture.
